Gtx 780/ti 6gb version

Was thinking of picking up two 780ti for 4k gaming. Best to go for 3 or 6gb versions?

6gb

You probably won't get a lot of chances to use the 6gb but it does give you the option to add a third card and more opportunities to use the extra vram.

Anyone buying when both are available for the small price difference I would not buy 3GB.

I am sure @ 1440p a 780Ti has enough grunt to use more than 3GB but less than 6GB in some games past, current and soon.

Imho, 1440 willl be the mainstay for pc gamers now, 4k is too demanding with current stuff. I started on 1680x1050, upgraded to 1920x1200, (love 16:10 for other work besides games). At that time it was classed as high res for pc games, 1440 is set to take over that area now for enthusiasts, 4k being the preserve of those who can afford the gpu grunt to run such, but i think us mere single gpu or xfire 290/sli 780 guys will be settling on 1440 for a few years yet.

Ignoring really old times I was playing at 1920x1440 on a 4:3 high end Mitsubishi CRT with a 8800 Ultra at launch on games like BioShock etc.

Then got the FW900 which is 16:10 so actually dropped RES to 1920x1200 but due to the 680 4GB and now this GPU I game at 2304x1440p when FPS make it possible.

Im relatively new to pc gaming, i did have a mitsubishi diamond crt at the start, then went to a viewsonic vx2025, (20" 16x10). It's used on my old i7 930 rig now, va panel as my o ld benq fp241w on my main rig in sig. There is nothing at present monitor wise to encourage me to upgrade really,i dont want to buy 1440 tn panel garbage. Waiting on 120Hz, g-sync ips at 1440.

I do not want an LCD period but not much else to buy for now.

Even when your ideal models come out your still going to play the LCD lottery for stuck/dead pixels and backlight bleed.

I understand, on my desk i have the monitor in sig, a 32" 1080p telly, a blu ray player, a sky digi box and a myriad of dvd's, blu rays, cd's and other associated pc/music/movie bits and bobs. Id like to put my case on the desk, but a phanteks enthoo primo case filled with highish end stuff weighs about 23kg. My old desk might struggle a bit. So a crt monitor is a no go.

Wel, ill be adding another wf 780 soon, yes they will end up running hot as my board is tightly spaced, but ive ran wf 670's in this board so i suspect things wont be too bad. Example below of current setup.

Hi bud, why don't you add a side panel fan have a look at one of these Raijintek Aelous Alpha 140mm - Black / Black 140x150x13mm, only 13mm thickness if your stuck for room.

Would help to get some cool air between the GPU'S reducing temps.

Could you supply an example please of 3gb not being enough for a single card.

Skyrim with STEP and all the HD mods installed will go higher than 3GB easily. This is at 1920*1200 or any higher, i know cause ive tested it.
Id take a 780 with 6gb ram over a 780ti with 3gb of vram, put a custom waterblock on it and which it fly past the Ti. I have 3 Titan blacks as i got them for nothing literally through Tax and my work.

I was expecting that someone would mention Skyrim with mods but the very word mods defeats your argument.:)

For a single card there is no contest, a 3gb 780ti will thrash a 6gb 780 even with a waterblock on it.

Does mentioning that you have 3 Titan Blacks make your argument stronger than mine as I use a couple of 1gb HD 5970s.:D

A 3GB ti on air will thrash a normal 780 on a custom waterblock with MSI Voltmod? I dont think so tbh, infact i know so and the difference between a heavily overclocked card on air and water is noght and day regarding performance wise.

There is no volt mod for the 780Ti except for the Classy. A good 780 Classy under water with decent volts should kick a 780Ti into touch.

I bid 1 Kingpin 780ti what have you got to counter with.

Dont matter what you use, a custom waterblock will destroy any air setup on any card. As for Kingpin, not worth using unless your using PC or LN, it wil be good for however regarding unlocked voltage, most cards will pop at around 1.4 or just over depending in quality of Vrm's which is where the power delivery comes from wether its cpu or gpu.

Even if you use a kingpin on air it will still hit a threshold as air can only do so much, id still bet on a 780 with custom block smashing an air cooled kingpin easily. Infact i know that it will as with air you get massive heat issues very early on.

IIRC the Kingpins on air topped all the 780s on our benchmark threads and were even better on water.

Also the original point was that a 780ti on air will beat a 780 on water, there was no mention of volt mods.

You were also saying a single 6gb 780 was better than a 3gb 780ti, I don't think so.
