[Guide] Buying RAM for Conroe...

Another thing to mention for Conroe is that timings don't seem to make a lot of difference. I can't remember where I saw the benchmarks but I am sure someone else can. Given the price premium for PC6400 and PC8000 then it may be worth going with some cheaper RAM, relaxing the timings a little and focusing on getting high Mhz out of it if possible. Anyone want to try?

Here comes the ultimate newbie question guys!

Which RAM should I be looking at for a stock, non-OC'ed Conroe Extreme Edition X6800? A dumb question, but I'm really not too knowledgable on DDR2, being an AMD user for the last few years.

Gskill PC5300 for under 120 quid inc VAT or the Corsair PC5400 for 135. Both are excellent 2x1Gb kits and offer great value :)

@Drazic

did you manage to overclock the Es6700 to 3.7ghz on air?

is that the max u managed?

thanks.

Nope i got bord and wanted more clocking so under she went on a stock Vapo ls. My bord died randoly and i only got her to 4.5. Now on a newer bord and some new mods and bios 500MHZ fsb and a dam higher clock hehehe

It's alright, you'll be overclocking that ram by a milestone however

PC 8000/8500 is what ya want as it's 1000/1066 mhz respectly which is nearly and what is Conroe

Oh and 1:1 does mae a massive differnce on the system. I just set some news speeds with it hehehehe

Stupid Q, but I assume the fact that the Corsair stuff is noted as being 10MHz higher really doesn't matter, right?
Really just planning ahead, that's all.

Yeah? PC6400 should be fine for a huge overclock. On an E6600 PC6400 will be good for 3.6GHz (up from 2.4GHz). No need for PC8000/8500 at all.

sorry if this sounds dumb but im not an expert of DDR2

i plan to buy a E6600 and overclock it to 3.3Ghz (333x9) or hopefully 3.6Ghz(400x9)

according the to chart i need DDR2 6400

what would be the better choice

Corsair 2GB DDR2 XMS2-6400C4
or
G.Skill 2GB DDR2 ZX PC2-6400

the timings for these are 4-4-4-12

will i need to reduce them in anyway if i want to run 333/400 FSB

thanks
No, you don't. The chart only goes up in 10Mhz. With PC5300 being 333Mhz stock that's all you need. Although obviously you can buy faster RAM and run it at that speed.

Best RAM for overclocking Conroe now listed on site! :)

Is there a major difference between the HZ and the ZX series? The HZ has 4-4-4-5-15 whereas the ZX has 4-4-4-4-12. And there's only £6 difference...

The HZ, as pointed out by many, is able to overclock above 1000mhz. That's like a Memory worth £300 at the price of £172ish. Bargain!

As pointed out by Dr Jones, the HZ kit overclocks very well. Don't worry about the timings, it's an error.

I also think the shiny black HZ kit looks better than the light blue ZX :D
