[Guide] Buying RAM for Conroe...

Flanno said:
Surely if you buy a mid range Conroe, then DDR2 6400 800mhz is a complete waste since Conroe will never be able to reach the max. bandwidth of this memory which is 12.8gb/s, even when the cpu is oveclocked.
That's my understanding, DDR2 5300 is fine, even for some pretty impressive overclocks.

Awesome guide. Just a quickie, I'm getting an E6600 but I'm not planning on overclocking (at least not straight away). Will I see a reduction in performance if I buy PC6400 instead of PC5400, or will they both run equally well, but the PC6400 will have the edge if I do decide to overclock? Thanks.

Yes, as far as i understand it with a E6600 at stock speed PC6400 and PC5400 memory will perform exactly the same, but if you plan to do some substantial overclocking then its best to go for the PC6400

I do not plan to overclock my Conroe E6600, is this good memory?

Corsair 2GB DDR2 XMS2-6400C5 TwinX (2x1GB) (MY-092-CS)

Or

Crucial 2GB (2x1GB) DDR2 PC2-5300C3 667MHz Ballistix Dual Channel Kit (BL2KIT12864AA663) (MY-079-CR)

Or

OCZ 2GB (2 x 1GB) PC2-6400 Dual Channel Special Ops XTC Series DDR2 (OCZ2SOE8002GK) (MY-071-OC)

Which is the best for stock?

So is this good enough for fast stock speeds

Crucial Ballistix Tracer DDR2 PC2-5300 • 4-4-4-10 • UNBUFFERED • NON-ECC • DDR2-667 • 1.9V • 128Meg x 64

Or

Crucial Ballistix DDR2 PC2-5300 • 3-3-3-12 • UNBUFFERED • NON-ECC • DDR2-667 • 2.2V • 128Meg x 64

?

Is 4-4-4-10 better than 3-3-3-12?

Lower number = better hence the CAS3 stuff is better.

Hi there

The GeIL 2GB and 1GB PC2-6400 CAS 4-4-4-12 Kits are your best bet now. They can run at PC8500+ speeds at CAS 4-4-4-12 with ease and I've personally had a pair upto 1150MHz stable at CAS 4-4-4-12. Whats even more impressive is one of these 2GB Kits will only cost you £110+VAT! :)

Nothing can beat these kits when it comes to value for money and you will also find it hard to buy a better overclocking kit for more money as well, these really are the dogs danglies. :D

The code you want to be buying is MY-058-GL !!!! :)

Hi Gibbo,

If money was no object, which would be the best from:

Corsair 2GB DDR2 XMS2-6400C4 TwinX (2x1GB) (MY-108-CS)
GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC6400 800MHz Ultra Low Latency DDR2 Dual Channel Kit (GX22GB6400UDC) (MY-058-GL)

Thanks!

I think his above post will probably give a good hint at which is the better of the two :)

The GeIL hands down! :)

The only Corsair part I have tested which is better is the Corsair 6400 C3 parts which uses slightly higher yield chips than there PC2-8500 part.
Though this Corsair part does cost over £300 and is incredibly hard to get hold off. Though saying that I've had the Corsair part running CAS3 at just under 1100MHz, though it would not go any further, at CAS4 it will go a little bit further than the GeIL but again it cost nearly £200 more for such a small increase.

Great guide. I was having issues getting my machine to overclock and i can now see why. I was setting the FSB to high compared to the RAM i had in the machine. Now got my 1.86 clocked up to 2.31 with no problems at all!

I was just about to suggest this, the 6400 HZ use the same IC as the 8000 set. DDR2-1000 is not a problem at 4-x-x-x.

These will undoubtably be the best budget memory for use with Conroe.

Also, like all the other Intels, running less than 1:1 is a big no no. For best results use either 1:1, 4:5 or 3:5.
mmmm maybe ive got old stuff :( i wouldnt have thought so as it was out of stock then back in stock before i ordered it about 1 mnth ago ill have to check, i can only get ddr1000 with the cpu running at stock, if i use a higher fsb 420 for example max i can get the ram to is about ddr950 or something :(

so let me get this right. To overclock my rig (P5W, Geil 6400 - although it says 5300 in bios), I have to

set multi to 9, fsb to 340; then set ram to 4,4,4,12 and 800Mhz to run it at 1:1 ratio?

any other settings to change VMCH or wotever it is

sorry for the noob questions but we all start somewhere :)
