Guild Wars 2

I'll be buying the standard edition, i don't think the deluxe is worth the extra and i am not shelling out for the CE version.

I've been waiting for this for years, didn't play GW1 as much as i should have and i know this is completely different. But i've been following for a long time and watched plenty of youtube vids. In my mind i'll enjoy the game, so i'll definitely be getting it.

I think the fact that the game is a MMO there's a huge chance that it will suck balls. It does look amazing, but so did every other big hyped MMO that has been released since 2005. I am just Sceptical these days when it comes to hyped games that have a big price tag on them.

If you feel that way, then wait until a few months after release and pick up a trial or refer a friend. That is normally the time when trials, raf's appear and give you a chance to try it out.

GW1 games were 24.99 for the standard, £49.99 for the boxed CE for each game, that's only £20 more than they are charging for the GW2 CE.

I would like the CE box very much, but I think I'll be shopping around for the digital deluxe instead.

It seems daft that they are selling a game without fees for such a tremendous price, that kind of like defeats the point of not having any fees. GW1 fans will still snap the game up at this price, though if you aren't too bothered about vetting it fast then I'd wait for a lower price.

On release GW was available for £17.99 for Standard and the CE which me and my mates bought Was £35-37

Very tempted to find a cheap Dd or even just a standard maybe.

I want this game but I want to know what its like first, hopefully I can get in the beta. I'm not going to gamble fifty quid.

Every mmo I've tried so far has looked great on paper and from afar but when I've played them they've been rubbish. This will have to be good to break that trend. The only way to know is to play it.

God, why is it so hard to accept that maybe just some of the 6 million or so people that bought GW1 would be ****ed by the pricing of this one?

It doesn't matter if the games are different, arena net built up a solid fanbase with the first game who are now expected to pay more than double what they did for each GW game.

This game also isn't entirely funded off box sales, it will also have a cash shop that sells things for money, this is the 'replacement' if you want to call it that to fees in other MMOs.

GW1 had no fees, no cash shop other than storage and character slots, and each game was priced around £20. Arenanet still made so much money that they were throwing away $100,000 anually for the first few years for their PVP championships.

Comparing the cost of this game to any other is also invalid when arenanet developers have boldly claimed time and time again that MMOs do not need fees and can be funded entirely off box sales alone.

Truth be told, if GW1 had cost this much when it launched, or if it had fees, anet wouldn't have had anywhere near as much success, and ther wouldn't have been a GW2 coming out this year.

I don't think the marginally higher price tag is going to put many people off.

Everyone was happy to pay £40~ upfront for Star Wars and that even needs a subscription after 30 days.

Maybe they have aspirations above providing an 'okay' game for GW1 fans? Did you not think of that?

Of course they have. That aspiation is to make the game like WoW so that they can try to kill wow. Many have tried that, all have failed. Arena net seem confident that they have the real wow killer here.

I was happy to pay £40 upfront for my Guild Wars collectors editions too, this is still quite a lot more at £50 for the standard digital download.

I don't think it ever will be possible, but that's clearly their motive otherwise they wouldn't have made the game so much more like other MMOs rather than making it like their own first one.

I've always felt that part of the reason they have made it more like an MMO is because they were getting fed up with people saying "yeah but thats not really an MMO" when talking about GW1

How is GW2 like wow btw?

I don't mind paying £50 for the game if it last me a year and no subscription.

That work out just little over £4 a month.

Its as much like wow as it is to any other MMO -- in that you have one character in a persistent world. As opposed to gw1 where you can have heroes/hench in instanced missions etc.

Edit - I am probably going to get a retail copy, £49.99 seems exploitative. That plus the digital deluxe bonuses look to just be cash shop items, a mini & an elite (really don't agree with).

Not sure what you're trying to say, do you mean that all games with characters and a persistent world are the same? GW1 had a persistant world and player characters so that must've been the same too?

What always seperated WoW from GW1 for me was the fact you could only have 8 skills on your bar and your "talents" were so simple (the skill points). That made a MASSIVE difference for PvP. Part of the skill became picking your skills before you went into the arena, less so about individual talents like in WoW. It makes all the difference to balance because typically some skills will be more suited to PvE and some more to PvP so you can buff and nerf those skills without affecting the other side of the game. WoW is a mess because with 30+ things available for each class in all circumstances, if you buff something, it buffs the class over the whole game.

That aspect of GW1 has been maintained (they've made it so that you can change weapons and 4 skills change, I know, but there's still only 8 skills available at any one time).

The graphical style is the same, the combat looks like it's going to feel the same (the way characters move, sound effects etc). I think this is going to feel like a natural evolution from GW1 personally and I'm looking forwards to it.

GW1 didnt really (by the devs own admission) have a persistent world, it had a persistent lobby, all be it a graphical lobby, in much the sameway that diablo has a persistent lobby (except theirs was text based). Even the GW devs themselves said that GW1 was not an MMO, it was a CORPG, and by their own statements say that GW2 is different because it "adds in a persistent world" ,cant add something which is already in existence so it would seem that the devs also think that GW1 didnt have a persistent world.

Last thing I want is GW2 to be anything like the first one. I've watched all the GW2 videos I can to help me make up my mind as to whether I want to play it and so far the new direction looks far better than I expected. GW was unique back in the day, it never felt like an MMo to me and I don't want GW2 just to be a reskin with pretty graphics as the first one is quite dated in all aspects (to me anyway).

£50 for early beta access and 3 day headstart, expensive ? yep but if the game is good it will be worth the price.

I've just picked up Guild Wars trilogy, started the first campaign and I must say it hasn't aged well.

The quest markers and map aren't very clear and not being able to move freely over terrain is frustrating to say the least - I miss my jump button! :)

I think I've been spoilt by WoW...

To the GW1 veterans: Approximately long will it take me (hours) to get started from scratch on the Hall of Monuments stuff?
