H&M Racism storm

In today's age it is undeniably clumsy to have published that, but the irony is that in a perfect society (that people are trying to create) this wouldn't have been an issue. So there is an element of it being self-perpetuating. But, again, very clumsy. We are not in the ideal future and racism still very much is an issue.

Racism will remain very much an issue for as long as enough people are determined to make it so. Sadly, there are still more than enough people determined to impose the idea that "race" is real, that it defines everyone and that it should be used to determine how each person is treated and what words can be used by people of the "wrong" race. People of the "right" race can say and do anything, of course, because as always the same thing is different when the "right" group identity does it.

I think that the only route to a lack of racism is a lack of racism. Same for all irrational prejudices. You don't move away from the idea of group identity defining everyone, defining how they should be treated and defining what they are allowed to say by imposing exactly that.

It all reminds of something posted on /r/TalesFromRetail.

Some till jockey had to open another till because the place was busy & as soon as they did, a mad rush of people swapped from one till to the newly opened one as soon as they saw the first customer move over. The till jockey innocently quipped "Monkey see, Monkey do" only to look up & see the shocked faces of the customers.

Something clearly not racist was taken as such by those too quick to jump on the wagon which seems to be the norm of late.

Monkey see and monkey do...

Even if the term 'monkey' is harmless for most Britons or Americans, it is also a very common racist insult targetted at blacks in Eastern Europe/the Balkans and even certain parts of Asia.

The H&M poster was not racist but given the context I've just mentioned it was inappropriate .

I can't believe nobody involved with this product spotted the potential ****storm coming.

Seriously? Even the photographer was probably wincing as he did the photo shoot.

It was so bloomin' obvious what the reaction would be, justified or not (in this case I think it's borderline justified - "monkey" is a well-known taunt when used against black people).

On the other hand, if someone were to set up say "little monkeys' clothing company" or something along those lines and basically make branded merchandise for kids - would it be right for them to state that their policy is to never employ any black or mixed race models for their clothes due to their brand name... that could also be rather racist.

They would probably be vilified for having only white kids in their adverts .

I actually don't understand some of the things that are considered racist. The "N" word. It's considered racist if a white person says it to anyone, but if a black person says it to another black person it's fine.

Oh look people on Twitter up in arms about something yet again.

I think it's time for the owners of Twitter to do us all a favour and shut it down (not because of this story alone). It's an awful platform, and I believe it has never even turned a profit anyway? It's just somewhere for people who are outraged by things to be outraged.

Bread and circus.

Twitter is the biggest circus of them all. Everyone can play the clown

I feel like the only sane person when I read about this story in the media.

It is far more disgusting to point out that a black child cannot wear that hoody than to pose a black child in that hoody. Aren't we meant to be moving forward as a society and ignoring skin colour over the actual important attributes of a person?

If you want to stop a black child wearing that hoody then you are a racist. How would you explain to the poor lad that he shouldn't be wearing it? "Sorry son you're too black?" How disgusting is that!

It's the 21st century, it's a free society...move on.

The biggest storm seems to be on OCUk by the resident neo-nazis. Funny how most level headed people simply don't care

You obviously haven't even looked elsewhere as it's been all over social media with people demanding someone gets fired for this etc etc.

Also labeling people neo-nazis isn't very level headed of you..

Possibly controversial view here, but I immediately thought it to be a bit racist that people would be offended by this. I've always heard kids be called "little monkeys", just because the kid in this picture is black, the very fact that anyone would call it racist, is almost racist in itself... :/

Agree... the one's calling it racist are the racists

It's "positive racism".

Rather than make blanket statements by referring to people as neo-nazi's why don't you quote the posts and challenge the views you disagree with.
