Replaying HL2 after seeing this. It still looks good! I can't believe this is 20 years old. So good.

I'd love to go back to the early-mid 2000's.

Not sure if it's just rose tinted glasses, but feel like gaming was coming on leaps and bounds every year and HL2 was absolutely mind blowing, both graphically, physics and game play wise :(

I'm getting old :o

Games were coming on as was the hardware to run them, we had new high end gpu releases in around a year after the previous high end, sometimes less than a year.

Now with games being more complex it takes longer to make them, plus back in 2004 we weren't getting pumped with dlc or unlockables for crap like skins. Pc games were around £40 max. There wasn't all these gimmicky editions that could go up over £100.

It was definitely a step up in graphics from the first one, although I'm sure there were tones of mods for hl1. I remember playing it with counterstrike guns lol.

Day of Defeat being one of the best of the conversion mods. Then valve get it, the community forums shut down and get moved to valve site (where they died) they release dod source in 2005 and nothing since that almost 20 years later (typical valve). :(

DOD was one of the first mods I really got into with WW2 being such a big thing because of saving private ryan and other war movies around the turn of the century. A simple game but a really fun one.

Loved DoD back in the day - think was the only time I was in a clan with mates from school who also played!

Also before that I absolutely loved the Firearms mod for HL ... Played way too many hours of that!

Genuinely pleasantly surprised by how well HL2 holds up even today. Did they update some of it? Doesn't feel 20 years old.

It's been so long there are whole areas I had forgotten about. And so good to play a game with no bugs or performance issues! Great fun. Will probably do Eps 1 and 2 after instead of blowing 50 quid on a buggy new game now.

Well, the most recent update was 26th November 2024, so 6 days ago. I had a look at the patch notes, one of the things in there is adding Ukrainian and Vietnamese language support.

Before that the BIG anniversary update was on 15th November, but prior to that not much for the decade before, just a small number of bug fixes.

I'm not convinced Valve would use the game awards to announce such a monumental announcement, but I'd love to be proved wrong. I feel like the HL2 anniversary would have been the ideal time to announce it if they were going to.

i cant really see any title at the moment let alone 2 titles that will blow fans away..
most of them recently have all been mixed or disapointing fromw hat i've seen.

The game is worth getting hold a VR headset for. I bought a secondhand Rift and sold it again after playing.

For me it was the best VR game I'd played, and set a standard. I'd do it again if the next installment was VR.
This is true! HL: Alyx is next level. I hope the next game is VR too.
