Half-Life: Alyx

“No no no, I insist, after you!” :D

I still think Alyx was a masterclass in gaming, yet alone in VR. Alyx and Boneworks were the first proper games I downloaded after I got my VR, so my expectations are somewhat lofty. Alyx wins the overall game award, Boneworks is a fantastic showcase of what VR can do, but between janky movement which always got me feeling sick, and gameplay that just never really seemed to reach a wow factor, it’s always stayed as just that - a great showcase piece.

That’s enough off topic twaddle from me though….

Ironically HL Alyx doesn't actually push the boundaries much on VR mechanics, apart from the gravity gloves (which are a refinement of other games distant grab mechanics) and the hacking minigames which are the most immersive of their type I have played.
There's no melee (to see what this adds try the HL2 VR mod), the guns are glued to your hand, and it's obviously designed first for teleport and smooth movement was added later.
It does however push the overall quality, polish and visuals past the vast majority of VR games.

im a little confused about a couple of things

i am sure at the beginning of the game it says you cant put things in your wrist pockets , except meds and grenades

now im able to wear a mask, and put a hat on, which i couldn't do before ?
also i can now put wine bottles in my wrist pockets and power batteries etc

You’re actually correct there and I’d never considered how safe they played it with the mechanics. But everything they do there is done so well. I’ve lost count of games where I haven’t been able to find things in my shoulder holsters, where you try to throw and item and it goes anywhere other than where it should, or you try and do a physics puzzle and it’s just so janky.

I think overall polish creates a more immersive VR experience than the Boneworks ‘let’s give everything physics and collision properties” approach.

Apart from wearing the hard hat, it’s beneficial to be able to store the batteries and vodka? bottles on the Jeff level, assuming that your talking about that level?
Wearing a mask protects from one headcrab face grab.
Wearing a respirator means you dont have to cover your mouth with your hand when you're near spores as well as a single headcrab grab protection.
Wearing a hat/cone on your head protects from one barnicle grab.
Bottle storage - Carrying a vodka bottle is related to an achievement, its easier to carry in your wrist pocket than in your hand though. Only vodka I think though.

I'm sure you can store stuff from about the start, maybe after the gravity gloves? You can definately wear some things on your head from the start.
