HALO 3 Official Thread

What's wrong with it then? I thought the issue was the 'whoever had the least shield dies' issue if two people hit each other within one second.

This is no longer an annoyance for me though, I had heard they solved it with the update that got rid of a lot of the maulers on most levels and also reduced the amount of shotty sniper matches

That was just a play list update, it did not change any of the game mechanics.

The problem is that its the person with the least shields that dies, rather than the person that gets hit first. There have been many many many times on my screen I have hit the melee button and promptly died. In halo2 I would have won all of those encounters. Also in Halo 2 melee damage was context dependant. you had a melee strength of 1 standing still. 1.25 moving forward and 1.5 when falling so if you timed a jump correctly you would have a 1.5 melee shot on an enemy. In Halo3 it seems that its absolutely down to who has most health, not who is dealing the most damage. I did a falling shot on an injured enemy and just went flying back up in the air. I know I hit him first.

They need to reduce the time delay to less than a second probably between 0.25 and 0.5 seconds.
IMO its complete pot luck if you come out of a melee encounter.

TBH it took them a while to sort things out in H2.

Another thing they should change is weapon swapping times. It just takes too long to switch weapons in this game.

Do you guys not experience melee lag more than the way they coded the game? For example I take a guys shields off, and he takes mine off after - I melee him, he melee's me and I die... Happens literally all the time and its latency, it was never this bad in Halo 2

Yep this is exactly what happens for me.

Or better yet. I shotgun a guy, melee him, he shotguns me and I die. I shout WTF, I effectively killed you twice and I died as a result.

I have also died in fights, before I was shot/hit. That makes me really mad.

Are the certain hot-spots on your body for this game.

Was playing a bit of MP last night, was with another player who had the standard rifle, I was emptying everything I had at him and he wasn't going down, just made him go a sparkly, he fires about 4 or 5 burst into me and I'm down! Dead! Expired! Ceased to be!

I'm really trying to get into this, but it just seems so frantic.

As in all FPS games, aim for the head.

Happens now and then, Im sure that other people I kill think the same at times.

We suffer far more than the general halo population because the majority of hosts are american. I only get these issues after, say, 8.30/9PM. I'd really like a choice to play with europeans only.

Halo weapons have different rates of fire, range, accuracy and effectiveness

Human/brute weapons (weapons that fire bullets) are more effective against armour and flesh
Elite (alien) weapons (weapons that fire multi coloured blobs) are more effective against shields.

Head shots only count when the shield is down (unless you have a sniper rifle in which case head shots are instant kills)

Needlers (fire pink shards) need to have 7-8 consecutive hits to kill otherwise its useless

Its the way they code the game unfortunately. It was the same in Halo 2 just nowhere near as bad, I mean in this game I will run round a corner with no shield and get sniped through the wall or so it appears. Say for instance in battlefield 2 - even if im playing in a US server, because they coded their games differently - if me and a guy kill each other at the same time, we both die. I know its using dedicated servers n'all but still.

And Kreeee - It is due to the majority of the population being american but I also believe its due to the fact that the Bungie servers are also based in America, every single byte of data probably has to get sent there first instead of going straight to another xbox

I SERIOUSLY doubt that. Maybe for game settings etc but definitely not for character movement data etc.

Nope the servers are only required for stats gathering. Possibly for validating the authenticity of the levels in the game and that no mods are being used. But once the game starts the data is only transmitted between the consoles involved in the game.

Not sure if its a multicast to all consoles, with the host using a veto system to decide on close outcomes or if everything is sent to the host and then cascaded to all the nodes.

So howcome when I'm playing in a game that has a UK host I still get massive latency?

That's down to individuals internet connections tbh. Are you sharing your internet with anyone else in your house? Is your router wireless and properly secured?

If its not your fault, then it could either be your ISP hitting you with a QoS (but only if they are retards) or the people you play with/against have Internet issues.

I find playing UK only games is mostly ok.

Wrong.
How Does Halo 2's Model Work?

Halo 2 uses a distributed networking model, where 1 xbox hosts the game, and all the other xboxes in that game are clients. This requires a little more bandwidth from the xbox hosting the game than if it were connected to a dedicated server.

The host authorises most aspects of the game (notably, the creation and destruction of objects, as well as damage inflicted), and is constantly overruling other players' versions of the game.

How Does Halo 3's Model Work?

Halo 3 uses a similar model to Halo 2, with modifications to allow limited client trust, and to prevent various network attacks.

If you're having latency issues against all UK players then someone has a duff connection.
