When did you last play?
I'm pretty sure the melee system has been fixed now
nope

Have you seen these sarcastic youtube vids of the Arbiter and the Chief. Quite funny.
WARNING some bad language.
Do you guys not experience melee lag more than the way they coded the game? For example I take a guys shields off, and he takes mine off after - I melee him, he melee's me and I die... Happens literally all the time and its latency, it was never this bad in Halo 2
Are the certain hot-spots on your body for this game.
Was playing a bit of MP last night, was with another player who had the standard rifle, I was emptying everything I had at him and he wasn't going down, just made him go a sparkly, he fires about 4 or 5 burst into me and I'm down! Dead! Expired! Ceased to be!
I'm really trying to get into this, but it just seems so frantic.
Happens now and then, Im sure that other people I kill think the same at times.

Yep this is exactly what happens for me.
Or better yet. I shotgun a guy, melee him, he shotguns me and I die. I shout WTF, I effectively killed you twice and I died as a result.
I have also died in fights, before I was shot/hit. That makes me really mad.
And Kreeee - It is due to the majority of the population being american but I also believe its due to the fact that the Bungie servers are also based in America, every single byte of data probably has to get sent there first instead of going straight to another xbox

Nope the servers are only required for stats gathering. Possibly for validating the authenticity of the levels in the game and that no mods are being used. But once the game starts the data is only transmitted between the consoles involved in the game.
Not sure if its a multicast to all consoles, with the host using a veto system to decide on close outcomes or if everything is sent to the host and then cascaded to all the nodes.
So howcome when I'm playing in a game that has a UK host I still get massive latency?

How Does Halo 2's Model Work?
Halo 2 uses a distributed networking model, where 1 xbox hosts the game, and all the other xboxes in that game are clients. This requires a little more bandwidth from the xbox hosting the game than if it were connected to a dedicated server.
The host authorises most aspects of the game (notably, the creation and destruction of objects, as well as damage inflicted), and is constantly overruling other players' versions of the game.
How Does Halo 3's Model Work?
Halo 3 uses a similar model to Halo 2, with modifications to allow limited client trust, and to prevent various network attacks.
