From the Belgian Race Directors Event Notes

Belgium has a limit on where they can be done, after leaving the pit lane but before the second safety car line.

So, yeah from the comparison with the previous races notes, Hamilton doing the starts in that position is absolutely fine. He was after the pit lane, space to his left and against the pit wall on the right.
Thank you.
That reference to sc2 line in the the Belgium event notes makes it crystal clear of
Leclerc rule breach in doing a practice start after the sc2 line yet masi went out of his way to sweep it under the carpet.

As it's on topic

Have a little watch of that.

I honestly don't know why they change the stewards all the time, it is inherently inconsistent.

True.

But Hamilton was over 200 m from the practice box.
That guy never mentioned that.

And Hamilton has said himself that he does his test start outside the box.

The guy said there was no practice box defined in sochi but was clearly defined in Belgium.
I think the you missed the point he was making i.e. why he got different treatment and the perception of bias.

I think a 6 time champion ought to realise on his own why it was not OK to do a practice start when cars are passing metres away at 150mph. It's a breakdown in communication (and he might have got away with it if that was it), but with his experience he ought to have at least double checked when they okayed him. Certainly so after the first time.

As I've said at least twice already, it's not bias, it's just common sense.

Spirit of the rules has never applied in F1.
They should have drawn a box on the tarmac,. or defined the area in the event notes, they did neither.
Point is in Belgium they did define the area and Masi took a picture of track and overlayed with his lines (as there is none on the track in spa either), yet FIA let it go there and come down on ham like a ton bricks.

Different interpretation for different people, that's what needs explaining and that was Priestley's point.

Common sense still applies to someone who is in his 14th season. No-one has ever done a practice start that far around in the history of F1, possibly with the exception of Interlagos (where there is no other safe area). There is no excuse for why someone of Hamilton's experience suddenly thought that near the end of the merge line was a good place to do it and he should have double checked it, or gone around while he discussed it with his team and they discussed it with Masi.

By that logic Hamilton could have done a start on the apex of turn 3 and should still have gotten away with it according to some people here, as apparently it wasn't explicitly stated how far around they could go...

I think its more just because he is the poster boy for "modern" F1 drivers which basically means a corporate promoting robot with little to no personality on screeen.

Agree, Interlagos is synonymous with Senna and such rich history, the likelihood of a new circuit to ever surpass past drama, highly doubtful.

Great 2017 article by the DM on the other Brazilian circuit Jacarepagua - Shame its no more :(

One of my favourite (maybe even absolute favourite) F1 tracks. Often get good races, especially with the unpredictable weather. Would hate to see it replaced.

Love watching the races at Interlagos. Often just unpredictable. Circuit has elevation, wonky bits, slow areas and high speed areas. Wonderful old style track.

I personally don't want to go there, but the track is fantastic.

I think it speaks volumes about F1 that they've agreed to be hosted at a circuit that doesn't even exist yet, I can't think what might have swung it.
