Hamilton to Mercedes? BBC

Maybe he felt the need to move because Whitmarsh is a massive ***** ?

I'm optimistic about Mercedes future. Let's face it Ferrari were supposed to have a comedy car this season and were going to be struggling. They ain't done to bad.

We can't even predict right at the beginning of a season yet everyone knows Mercedes are always going to suck!

I guess we will have to wait and see what the detail of the deal are, unless they are already out?

Someone at work was saying the news report they heard said 3 years. How true it is I don't know and I don't know which radio station.

As for the move, I think it is a wrong move in terms of wanting to win a WDC, however I wouldn't discount Mercedes to produce a winning car especially with the reg changes for 2014. Also I haven't seen if reasons have been given for him to want to leave McLaren. It makes me wonder whether there is something more going on behind the scenes with McLaren that means Hamilton wants to leave, in which case his only choice to jump ship now is Merc.

I like Perez and maybe he will grow at McLaren but still feel he makes too many mistakes. I would have preferred one one of the Force India drivers to be in a higher team, preferably Di Resta but thats just personal preference.

I think that Perez has out performed Di Resta this season in terms of impressing McLaren. It was always going to be between those two though.

I agree that Whitmarsh will have been a big factor. McLaren under Ron was Lewis-centric, Whitmarsh quite obviously didn't feel the same.

But at the end of it all, I think the big thing that people will see is that Lewis went to Mercedes for the money. Which just throws all his "I just want to be in a race winning car" claims out the window and means my opinion of him, and I expect many other peoples opinions, have gone through the floor.

I thought the reaction from Schumacher fans was just to lay into Mercedes?

Or is that just arknor.

Oh yea, dont worry i hate mercedes now lol

I think they way it was announced was maybe a little rude to Schumacher, i hope they gave him time to decide his future as well

Yeah, Villeneuve at least had the excuse that pollock was practically his father and felt he owed him one. Plus they had Honda coming as an engine supplier which at the time every one thought was a mega coup.

I hope Mercedes prove us all wrong but to me it seems this is about money and time off. Or that because he was going too be no less than his current deal it felt that mclaren no longer valued him. Drivers tend to have this attitude of worth depending on what every one else gets paid, a measure of respect.

Ugh.

1) If this was really about the money all along - how utterly disappointing :/
2) If this is about Whitmarsh not coddling him the way Ron did - he's not going to find what he's looking for at Mercedes.
3) If this is about performance - he's really not going to find what he's looking for at Mercedes unless by some miracle they get the upcoming change in regs absolutely on the money.

Anyone who had a bet on him to blitz the final few races and steal the championship out from under Alonso - you just lost your money :(

I'd imagine the whole 'chain' of moves and things has all been agreed, they just aren't releasing all the information at the same time.

Nothings ever simple, Hamilton will have been sold the new regs by Brawn (being quite uncompetitive, they can actually concentrate more on the new regs car - Mclaren don't really have the option of doing half a job on next seasons car because they want to win that too).

He also has had some problems at Mclaren, not had the best car in many instances, team has made mistakes in other. But he should remember the many, many mistakes he made last year.

But I think the clincher, is that he doesn't feel the love in the team like he used to, he was mclaren as far as anyone was concerned a few years back - now to be honest it seems like he's not that well liked and everyone loves Button. Regardless that Hamilton will outperform button, they just like him more and I think that really sticks in his throat.

Yep. Money + Time off to spend it.

Personally feel like Lewis has completely sold out. BBC suggested it was off the back of Brawn convincing him that they'd have a decent car come 2014, and relive the previous form he's had (Brawn). Personally however, I don't feel he can achieve it without a brilliant technical director like Newey.

I guess there's hope for Lewis that Alonso is doing so well in the Ferrari this year, but definitely feel Lewis will have to mature slightly by then. He has the ability to drive a car beyond it's limits, but I'm not sure how well he'll do it. But it's not like the Mercedes has shown any more reliability than the McLaren this season...

Perez moving to McLaren is a nice move, although personally would have preferred perhaps someone else feeling the seat (Di Resta).

The final question I guess would be Schumi. Peter Sauber saying he'd give him a seat is promising that people still value him, but, whether he'd take that kind of cut would be questionable. Personally, I'd love to see him go take Hulkenberg's spot at FI. They're doing alright at the moment, and the FI Mercedes link would support the move. I'd also quite like to see Schumi in Grosjean's seat, but not sure how realistic that would be as they already have Kimi as the 'older, wiser' driver... That said to be fair, even if he does only have Sauber's seat offered, Sauber are coming up the rankings well this year as well. Kobayashi and Perez have both done well, showing good form from the team...

Wow. And everyone in the know seemed to be leaning to him staying at Mclaren.

Good for the sport IMO, possibly good for Hamilton to have a change of environment too. Will it provide a basis for winning? Possibly not until 2014.
