Finally on install NUMBER 4 everything has finalled installed correctly i.e. the Windows updates and WMC free add-on. This time I uninstalled just about every driver I could get away with plus disabled Windows Firewall etc.

I let Windows install their own signed drivers and now everything seems to be OK plus I've done another full system image.

The issue must have been with one of the drivers though no idea which one was the culprit, maybe it could have been more than one?

I'm still singularly unimpressed with the metro UI so will look at options for getting rid of it.

Of all the Windows installs I have done (and there have been many) this has been far and away the most problematic and the slowest.

I'm convinced that if the "metro" start screen was a third party replacement for the start menu people would be going mental at how great it is and how it's so refreshing.

After using Windows 8 in it's many guises (and now the final release since we got it on volume licensing), I stick by my original thoughts for standard desktops, it's just a clunky, awkward to navigate, mess.

On any device with an input method suited to the Windows 8 gestures however I like it. I think it's great on my Dell XPS 15z with it's multi-touch touchpad, and it works OK (not great, but liveable) even on an older single touch touchscreen Toshiba laptop (even moreso when using the stylus).

I'm going to hold off installing it on my main PC until I get hold of an Logitech T650 touchpad, so that if I'm doing anything other than gaming (or photoshop work), I can use the extra large touchpad for Windows 8 navigation. If that fails then I'll be falling back to StartIsBack, which is hands-down the best Start Menu reinject for Windows 8, and actually makes it usable with a mouse.

You don't count. Most of your posts in this thread consist of ignorant/uninformed comments backed up by "that's my opinion".

Well that accusation could be leveled at many people I suppose? Let's face it your rudeness and lack of tolerance doesn't exactly cover you in glory does it?

Oh! that sort of comment is only going to land you in trouble on here. You see the treatment I get for stating very similar beliefs i.e. I don't see what the advantage is for Desktop users.

I agree to one thing, win8 isn't for everybody, but that goes for any OS. some will like/love it, some will hate/don't like it.

just use what OS u like/prefer

it's that simple really.

nobody here is saying everybody must upgrade to every new OS. some people are still on xp because they prefer that and don't have any benefits from vista/7

Seems fine to me, using it with a mouse is no problem at all. I just wish they had completely done away with the "desktop" and had everything running from the metro ui.

I've mentioned one of the advantages for desktop use i've found, having access to the start screen from the bottom left and settings/power menu etc from the bottom right, having these available in every corner of every screen when using multiple screens on the desktop is nice, and the way it grabs the mouse if your pushing down (or up) and into the corner is helpfull as you dont need to be too accurate. I'm finding it a slicker experience when working across three screen, it means if i want to launch a program i dont have pinned to the task bar i can just nip to the bottom left of any screen, and in two clicks have what i want rather than going to whichever screen has the start menu and navigating the menu structure.

Tried using Modern again last night for a bit, just can't get on with it. The whole concept just doesn't work for me in what's meant to be a desktop environment. I find bypassing it completely much more productive.

See I find a lot of that really annoying. I'm getting frustrated by the fact that when I type, I often end up pushing the mouse with some part of my arm as I have a small desk, leading to the mouse going down bottom right. This leads to all the windows being minimised while I type. Hardly a great feature for me.

I am one of MS' staunchest supporters, but the more I use metro on a desktop (or a server - which I still don't understand why that's there) the more little things are making my UX worse, not better.

i'm sure its not for everyone but its working great for me :)

not a fan Loving windows 8 so far but the start menu can rot in hell just like it did in every other windows tbh.

all I need is clicky's for my most common programs xD creature of habit that I am

This gets me too. We've got 4 or 5 Server 2012 boxes in production at the moment, and the ModernUI/Metro interface on a server is the single most retarded idea I've ever come across.

Server 2012 needs to drop straight to desktop and have a proper start menu, although I guess if it did then that would leave it open to people resource hacking the bits needed to give it back to Windows 8 natively.

Not loving the 'Modern UI' the name is lame as is the function. Removed most of the 'Modern UI' apps as simply no point on a PC, compared to a full fat version in a decent HTML5 compliant browser. It's also missing a most used applications list of tiles which should be in a moveable column so it can be positioned closest to the left, maybe 2nd column in if you use Apps. This should also be reverse sorted so the most popular is at the bottom of the list and therefore closest to the bottom left.

I am sure more tweeks/updates will come out improving Win 8 even more after Microsoft have seen the reviews / feedback

Don't really like it at all and can't see what advantages it offers me yet.

Since using Win 8 with the third party start menu, booting straight to desktop, I much prefer it now tbh

Fully agree. Microsoft have slipped up by not offering a "Classic Mode" option. Not having a Start menu or being able to boot into Desktop as an option alienates many existing Vista & Win7 users.

Third party software such as Start8 can make things better, but it is buggy and nowhere near as professional as what MS should have offered.

Personally, I hate the Metro interface and avoid using it wherever possible. I already have all the tablets I need, and want a PC to be a PC.
