But you do get it don't you? As you said I have tried it and didn't see what the benefits over 7 were/are. Therefore I'm waiting for someone like you to tell me what the benefits are. I'm beginning to get a distinct feeling that people have installed 8 claim it is great but when questioned more closely cannot answer the question in any detail as to why it is great or why it is so much better then W7.
I've already said how benefits me

metro makes things much better and easier due to the big tiles. and I like the idea of having apps in metro. plus it's a nice way to organize the programs you've installed

also its faster bootup/shutdown , feels smooth running, defrag now optimizes ssd,

we can't say how it'll benefit u because we are not u

Well that's good to know - glad you've had a good experience. I think they're missing a trick with not giving the option to scan the tiles though, maybe we'll see it eventually as it makes sense to support that out of the box in my eyes.

Well I'm back to Windows 7 - again. Upgrading to 8 went without incident though incredibly slow upgrade process. Windows installed updates shut down then never got past 13% again. However, this time I had uninstalled audio video and game drivers - made no difference. Tried to restore Windows Image file I created earlier but Windows refused that also, said no image available which was clearly not true.

Thank goodness for Acronis and my W7 backup. All this on virtually new hardware. I'm done with 8.

its a very big step in the right direction, integrated computing will demand an interface that works across multiple platforms.

I have now bound Alt+F4 to my precision aim button on my R.A.T 5 mouse, instant close of metro apps now, much better than grabbing the app and dragging it down to close it.

I've found a few benefits now i'm using it on my main pc, as i mentioned before having organised my start screen so its just the programs i want on there, i'm actually using it where as i didnt use the start menu before as it was full of things i didnt need and the modern ui is easier to keep tidy and focused on what i want to be there. I dont use any metro apps yet, may never even, but i'm still finding the benefit of the new interface.

using three screens, its easier now being able to go the corner of any screen, not just the main one, and access the start screen, and settings menus etc, also it helps by catching the mouse when you get to the corner, so dont need to be hugely accurate when its on the border between screens, also the task bar is on all three screens which is handy.

^^^ why didn't u just do a clean installation??

I performed a reset which as you know strips everything to bare bones and still the darn thing sticks solid at 13% when installing updates despite stripping out the drivers. Seems this is a common problem with HP Laptops at present. Given HP are one of Microsofts biggest partners one might have expected that they at least might get this launch right. To be honest I cannot face yet another two hour install only to find it doesn't work again. For what I use the Lappy for W7 will be more than sufficient until hell freezes over. For any real work I use the iMac these days. I'm certainly not brave enough to trash the Windows VM on my iMac as I have work on there going back 15 years.

well yeah HP Laptops have afew issues but not only about windows 8. I had a hp G60 laptop and it killed self because HP don't put a good enough cooler in their laptops, that's also a common problem with HP Laptops..

now I have a N2760 gaming laptop which runs win8 great but I only have 1 issue, when booting in win8 the screen goes blank sometimes and the only way to get the screen back on is to close the lid then open it again, it's due to the intel 3000 gpu driver, it seem a common problem with Laptops with intel 3000 gpu. once im in windows the NVidia 555m gpu kicks in when running a demanding program/game which still works great in win8.

+1 however if you disagree with the hive you will get harangued, as you have seen with my experience.

Harangued? All I have seen over the last 3 pages is you trolling, I think everyone here understands that you don't like win8, down with microsoft viva la apple - whatever, how about moving along so everyone else can have a discussion, enough is enough!

I didn't like the layout at first, but growing on me, overall experience seems faster and more responsive, running on an old laptop - will no doubt tweak it a little to how I want it, need to use it a lot more, but overall I think it's a decent launch.

I will no doubt sort my main rig out later on in the year, early next year when all drivers are a bit more refined.

MS releasing an operating system that will allow more communication with mobile devices is only a good thing and only get better over time - like marmite, it's not going to be for everyone.

Installed Win 8 for father in law on sat on his laptop and he is well happy.

Anyone installed it on a netbook yet?

Some netbooks will suffer from the lack of resolution, but by and large it will be an improvement. Whether I'd want to waste a Windows 8 license on one is another thing but it's cheap at twice the price at the moment so why not.

I installed the consumer preview on somebody's laptop, which they use daily, and didn't hear a peep out of them. I asked a couple of weeks later, out of curiosity more than anything, whether they had worked out how to shut it down yet. They said they just pressed the power button.

They're well happy with it too. At least, they will be until the license expires. I'll sort them out before then though.

If as you say you have read all my posts then you know full well that what you assert is BS pure and simple.

I have it installed on my Acer netbook.

It's great for netbooks because its much faster than Windows 7 starter. What's not so good is metro apps won't run without a registry hack due to the screen resolution. I've modded it to boot straight to the desktop and use the Windows 7 start menu and its great. Works just like 7 but faster.
