no body is saying who's right or wrong.

if you don't like win8 and prefer win7 that's fine. no point keep bagging on about it and try to find silly little reasons to bash windows 8 by searching the web to do that,. it won't change anything.

just get on with life..

I am getting on with life and surely this is what debate is all about, not bashing as you claim. Given I don't own any MS mobile devices I see slim pickings for the average Desktop user over and above Windows 7 that is all. I did ask if anyone had a convincing argument to the contrary for someone in my situation but so far the silence has been deafening?

yes, I use the mouse with my chin to control the cursor and to type with a on screen keyboard.

yes I've been trying some switchs which is mapped to keys but I mostly use them for gaming

that would be good feature to have

Have you tried/had any success with an eye-tracking setup? Has Windows 8 broken any accessibility products you use?

In my experience the general trend of IT moving towards touch-centric UIs is a bit of a mixed bag from an accessibility point of view. What you gain in some respects you lose in others. Has the whole "metro-ized" thing been an overall win for you?

just because u don't own any MS mobile devices doesn't mean other people don't.

u make it sound like MS must work the OS around u

The convincing argument is metro is far far superior for your average user and even for us more advanced users. Just because I can go play in the settings doesn't mean I want to.

Now my parents have win8 they can actually go and get/buy software and install it. No confusion settings or options. No crap software that is added on to the install package, that I get a phone call asking how to delete it.

Metro is a far superior UI for casual competing and desktop is one click away and hasn't changed when you have to do heavier work load. They complement each other. They do not detract.

I'll agree with that.

desktop is one click away and hasn't changed when you have to do heavier work load.
I preferred it when it was no clicks away and had the start menu though.

For me they clash. It feels like two completely different OS's

It works as a slick tablet OS that has a full powered version of Windows buried within it. On a desktop or laptop that isn't for casual computing I don't think it's ideal.

Why do children talk about their parents as though they are in their dotage? My daughter runs a large IT department yet she still phones her old Dad up for advice.

I don't think I can agree with this at all. Using both desktop and Metro apps seems a mess to me, like they threw two different operating systems together and did little to integrate them.

For example when I'm using the desktop all my open apps are down at the bottom in the task bar, but then my Metro apps are all on the left side (and first I have to go to the upper left corner and then move the cursor down). If I use alt+tab it mixes them both in together, but of course closing Metro apps to clear up the alt+tab is totally different to closing the desktop apps. You have two different usability concepts going on at the same time.

Thankfully I can just choose not to use Metro apps, which is good as a fullscreen only ecosystem is a crime against desktop PCs. You say it is superior for casual users, but I don't reckon casual users are going to find switching between a full screen solitaire and their browser, while chatting in a messenger program, to be anything other than more cumbersome in Metro. Maybe I'm wrong though.

Right in the interests of fair play I have re-installed W8 on the HP Lappy using the ISO. Very long install time - again 1hr 30mins. This is on a Lappy that apart from a couple of browsers and MS Office 2007 is totally clean, no documents pics or anything else - hardware - Quad AMD chip, 6 gig of RAM and 750gig HD. Why such a long install time is a mystery.

So far, every time I plug a peripheral in I get the message "installing device, this may take a few minutes". This is followed by a green loading bar that only moves a centimetre but never completes? I have successfully completed a system image and have an Acronis image of my W7 install so will see what happens over next few days. I still can't see any good reason for metro on a Desktop though.

That wasn't really my question though was it? I simply asked what the benefits of 8 were for someone like me, and there must be many millions, over and above what 7 already offers.

If you used it then surely you should know what benefits would be there for you?

For casual this means people who don't really use desktop PC's or become scared when they are put in front of one. I know plenty of people who are like this, Especially when installing programs etc.

Metro makes this a lot easier & safer for the average joe.

What would you have been like if they completely removed the desktop?

I really really don't get u , u already used win 8 right? u found you didn't find any benefits of using win8 right? so u went back to win7 right?

job done.... stick with win7.. not everybody will like win8 or get benefits from it....

it's just like xp to vista to 7, some people liked it and got benefits from it, others didn't

nope I've not tried that but I've tried a head pointer tracker and it was difficult

nope all my accessibility products / software still run fine.

yes, i'm loving metro because it makes things much better and easier due to the big tiles. and I like the idea of having apps in metro

plus it's a nice way to organize the programs you've installed

But you do get it don't you? As you said I have tried it and didn't see what the benefits over 7 were/are. Therefore I'm waiting for someone like you to tell me what the benefits are. I'm beginning to get a distinct feeling that people have installed 8 claim it is great but when questioned more closely cannot answer the question in any detail as to why it is great or why it is so much better then W7.
