Hanns-G HW191D Thread (Now £107.95 @ OcUK)

I like the Hanns-G HW191D 19" Widescreen LCD Monitor and the price looks a right bargain. But I am wondering if my VGA card will be able to run the screen resolution of 1440 x 900

its an ATi 256Mb X850XT Card

PS I haven't read all the previous pages, so I apologise if its already been posted ;)

Depends what you want to run. It'll run 2d stuff at 1440x900 just fine as will almost every graphics card made in the last 5 years or so i believe but games will of course get slower as there are more pixels to render.
I have a 6800gt which is about the same era as the X850 and i was pleasantly supprised to find it runs bf2 at a higher resolution without any problems, i initially thought it would struggle.

If you currently run at 1280x1024 then it should run better on the 19" widescreen.

1280*1024 = 1 310 720
1440*900 = 1 296 000

Less pixels to render

What is the next resolution down from 1440*900 you can run at on the Hanns out of interested (retaining the the 16:10 aspect ration)?

The next 16:10 resolution down is 1280x800, as I don't have one of these monitors I can't confirm whether is works or how good it will scale. It should work as long as your graphics card can output the resolution, but like I said I don't know how good it will look due to scaling.

Mines just arrived, and thankfully no dead pixies. I felt the built quality wasn't all that, but I can't complain for the price. The screen itself is very nice and vibrant. I haven't tried VGA yet, but can say that DVI is crisp and sharp as expected.

My desk is a right state now as I''ve not tidyied it up yet. Going to order a second screen later tonight to replace my existing 17" tft.

Why do you need so many monitors I thought you were gettiing rid of one! ;)
Dual screens for the pc (dual 19" widescreens anyway) and one 20.1" for ze 360! Bigger is BETTER! I'm sure you've been told that :p

P.S Anyone posts a 24" dell on here gets the curse of anelli (privates eaten by a daoc badger when they sleep)

Not really mate no. The only difference is that the 19" is more brighter but it wasn't configured for the 360. I just plugged it in just to see if there was a clarity/sharpness difference, there wasn't one.

thanks. the thing is that 20" screens are still mich more expensive than 19"s. therefore i have decided to go for a 19", maybe the HP w19, which costs a bit more than the HannsG, but looks very nice and in the future will match perfectly my MAC.

Since I've changed to DVI I've had problems.

Every time I boot up the screen goes black and I don't get a picture until I take out the DVI cable and plug it in again. Also, when I return to windows after playing a game not in 1440x900 the screen goes all corrupted. Once again, fixed by re-inserting the cable. None of this happens with the VGA cable.

I get exactly the same thing, only just noticed it?? I had red interference flickering across the screen until I removed the cable after playing BF2 just now, and I got a blank screen when I exited from Pacific fighters until I removed and reinserted. Surely a faulty DVI port?

PS what video card have you got?? Mine a 9600 Pro.

Im not a tft boffin but, what type of DVI-D cable are you using, is it a single link or dual link ?
Im using a Dual link cable and dont get any probs what so eva.

I'm thinking about getting this monitor and connecting PC via DVI... are the cheapo £10 DVI cables sold on here actually any good? I know AV people who spend £30+ on such things.

Also, can someone confirm that you can switch between DVI and VGA input at will (so, for example, we could connect a 360 into the VGA)?

Oh and dual link is required for higher resolutions because single link doesn't have enough bandwidth, hence it's needed for those 1920x1200 30" screens.
