Haswell -E Core i7-5960X, 5930K, 5820K specifications

I'm exactly the same boom...I have £1k cash but need to buy a new ssd and another 780 to sli so think my credit card will need to take some of the hit.

I've got a gigabyte 780, but never used their mainboards, what make of ram you going for ?

I'm a Gigabyte mobo fanboy lol. Gonna pick up the cheapest 16GB DDR4 kit I can find, around £150, CPU £280-£300. Mobo hopefully £250.

All in for around £700. Then next year pick up some better spec memory for a decent price. Hopefully the 6930K will have 8 cores as well, and be a slot in upgrade. This setup is just to get me onto X99 cheapest as possible.

My GF may possibly murder me if I jump in tomorrow but not sure I can resist :D Will need to sell my Z97 and 4790K to lessen the blow to the wallet :)

Is there any new news on when Broadwell-E is due out?

The last I heard was we won't see Broadwell-E until the end of 2015 at the earliest.

Q4 of 2015 I think it was.

Yeah that's right, this time next year.

Thing is if you go X99 now your pretty much guaranteed the highest end platform through 2015 > 2016 with Broadwell -E. Two years at the high end, from that perspective it represents good value imho. I could stay on Z97 but most likely 5770K will likely be another 'non soldered' 4 core chip with a better IGPU and only 5% IPC boost.

I think longterm X99 (5820K) is the better value setup. Broadwell -E should cement it's lead again next year and hopefully by the time that's getting boring AMD will have something to counter Intel with, you would hope so anyway two years from now lol.

Last year the 4960X 6/12 core/thread with 15mb cache and support for DDR3 was £750
This year the 5820K 6/12 core/thread with 15mb cache and support for DDR4 is £280

Finally feels like progress has been made at the high end ! We lost some PCI lanes, but honestly who cares when your saving near £500 :P

I want a 5820K lol.

Argh!

I dont know what to do. :(

Im definitely buying a new CPU/mobo/ram this weekend, dont know if I should be brave and buy the 5930k/x99 or play it safe and go for a 4790k/x79..........

That's not even a dilema. I would have thought it was a given :D

5820K + 16GB DDR4 + X99.

It's a million times better than Z97 + 4790K and not even that much more expensive !

Ive never overclocked before so was under the impression that for gaming at least 4790 would be a better option.

Or I can take the plunge and overclock the 5820 or 5930 if I buy 1 of those. And get the **** kicked out of me by the misses if I arse it up :)

In the review zola25 linked to above, the 5960X keeps up in gaming even with it's low clock speed and not all cores being utilized, when you take a 5820K and clock it to say 4Ghz > 4.4Ghz it will be just as fast as Z97 4790K for gaming and much faster in every other scenario that utilizes more cores. The low power draw of 5960X was a nice surprise as well, 5820K will be even more efficient.

With programs and even games (DX12) rumored to be using more cores in the future, I think the X99 makes the most sense and with those things considered offers more long-term value than a 4790K + Z97 platform. Sure the initial layout is slightly more expensive but X99 is a platform built to have long legs, DDR4 support, Broadwell -E upgrade path next year. I really think you should go for X99 and 5820K now it's here.

If deciding between 4790K or 5820K another way to look at it is this, tbh it's vastly superior for a very little amount more cost.

4790K,

Haswell
22nm
Clock Speed: 4000 > 4400 (Unlocked)
L1 Cache: 128KB (Code) / 128KB (Data)
L2 Cache: 1024
L3 Cache: 8192
TDP '88w'
Cores: 4
Threads: 8
Max # of PCI Express Lanes '16'
DDR3

5820K,

Haswell
22nm
Clock Speed: 3300 > 3600 (Unlocked)
L1 Cache: 192KB (Code) / 192KB (Data)
L2 Cache: 1536
L3 Cache: 15360
TDP '140w'
Cores: 6
Threads: 12
Max # of PCI Express Lanes '28'
DDR4

That's nothing really, most of lose that amount everytime we swap out a part ! (Plus you picked a fairly low end Z97 mobo, doesn't even compare to a X99 board)

A little more initial layout for a platform that will def have longer life in it than Z97. Not even a choice for those building now. X99 + 5820K for sure.

5820K 6 core / 12 thread CPU (Spec similar to 4960X, with improved IPC + DDR4 controller), X99 Motherboard and 16GB DDR4 for under £700 ! Bargain imho.

Boomstick777 and you can upgrade cpu next year and have ddr4s for next upgrade also.

Lol, I'm trying to work out whether you were being sarcastic or not as I may have mentioned CPU upgrade and better DDR4 next year a few times to many already :D

Ha I'm going to shut up about it now, and just here waiting like a coiled spring to see who has best prices, ready to pull the trigger :p

5960X going to be the path for my 4k build but I really need GPU's to catch up so probably won't be for another year or more at least.

Probably looking at 3-5 years before a single GPU can offer anywhere near decent fps at 4K.

Until then 2 or 3 GPU's is the way forward for 4K..

5960X + 2 x 290X 2 x 780 Ti or 295X2 would be a decent 4K setup, ridiculously expensive though :p

I'm waiting until Korea start making cheap 4K monitors :D by then hopefully GPU's will have caught up.
