Have the money for 5090 but...

My 480 almost lasted me 8 years and it didn't cost £2000.

He doesn't need to spend that much.

Well super I’m happy for you? I sold me rx480 8 years ago. What’s your point on what he needs to do????

Also I defo didn’t say he should buy a 5090, my post was very sarcastic as if to say.. you do t need to spend £2200

Genuine advice, no don't do it. A house + £115k is very nice, and nothing to be sniffed at, but if you view it as 'money to burn' then you won't make the most of it and will get through it very quickly.

Be sensible - invest it, save it, and spend in moderation on things that you'll actually get use out of. You'll actually appreciate it more this way too.

Exactly. Use the money to help achieve financial freedom and retire earlier. Create a long lasting income stream that requires you to do little.

Amongst all the chatter in this thread there is some sound advice, someone worked hard for that money, don't fritter it, make it work hard for you. For your use case buy mid-range now, invest the rest, you will earn plenty off the investment to keep you in mid-range upgrades for life.

I haven't had a new system for near a decade and have been chomping at the bit to buy since July. I only have a 34 inch 60hz monitor and only a light casual gamer. Buying the 5090 would probably do me another 10 years but should I do it?

Get a nice new system and good OLED monitor. Since you are only a casual gamer, consider buying something in the midrange end of the market, the 5070Ti should be perfect for you. this would last you four or five years no problem. The OLED monitor will make games/movies look fantastic.

And maybe consider getting into VR.
