Have vs. of

I really don't see why such trivial things would have/could have/would have/could have bothered someone so much.

I don't think it's that annoying.

In speech you don't typically say could have, but could've.

Could've sounds exactly the same as could have. (Edit - oh ok not exactly the same.....!)

I can understand why it's a frequently made mistake.

This, I understand the mistake but only in speech. Writing should be correct.

It doesn't REALLY though old bean, sure it sounds similar, but at times I have heard it said and it's been very clear people are using the wrong terminology. I guess it depends how lazy you are when pronouncing the words. :)

Actually to speak correctly "could have" would be pronounced "cud ov" and "could have" would be "cud 'av" so how about we end this right now

ov and av are perfectly exceptable words in the Midlands

Hehe I think it's good to raise awareness, I appreciate that people correct mistakes, otherwise I might come across as a thick person and I certainly do not want that. When I was learning English, I made that "would have" mistake, my teacher looked at me like a was an imbecile and slowly as if I had mental illness problems, with a shocked look on his face as to how one could possibly make such gruesome mistake, told me that it is in fact "would have". Never again in my life did I make that mistake again. That event always pops into my head whenever I see "would have".

I usually speak with my tongue slack out of the side of my mouth, like a mortally wounded cow.

That must make it rather difficult to pronounce certain sounds. On the other hand your tounge is already sticking out of your mouth makig it easier for you to lick windows...
