• Competitor rules

Please remember that any mention of competitors, hinting at competitors or offering to provide details of competitors will result in an account suspension. The full rules can be found under the 'Terms and Rules' link in the bottom right corner of your screen. Just don't mention competitors in any way, shape or form and you'll be OK.

Have you swapped your MSI 7950?

3 screens will result in higher idle temps.

Yep, thats why I am not so worried about it. I love the irony thats the MSI box states it is 17'C cooler, but in my system it was 17'C hotter (as idle). Perhaps they meant the competition was 17'C cooler . . .

Haha, probably :p
Did nvidia`s driver gave a boost? Did 660Ti cought up with 7950?

Urgh only just saw this thread. Ordered one of these for my brother yesterday on the weekend deal, really hope it is without fault.

Can he get 1440p through the DVI connection or will he need to use HDMI or DP? Description on OCUK says DVI-I  but on MSI website it says Dual-link DVI (is this DVI-D), which is correct?

Fingers crossed!

I'm sure it'll be fine. Mine is fine at stock, nice and quiet. Overclocking it pushed the temps up very quickly though, which is a bit frustrating when you know you could get much more out of the card.

DVI-I means that it's bit digital and analogue. I was confused by this when I got mine. The DVI port worked fine for 2560x1440 though.

Yes but buying a Frozr card I would expect to be able to OC comfortably, even the stock coolers are quiet at stock speeds.

EDIT: OK, just installed, he says its load between 50-70°C on Planetside 2 but quite noisy. I was under the impression custom coolers were quieter?

It becomes noticeable at 60% fans, and it gets noisy at 65% and up. Mine sits around 65-68% and 77C in games with a 1100/1350 1.1V overclock. :(

I'm not particularly happy with it either tbh, but I don't want to RMA in case it gets rejected. Then I will have paid £25 to have a week off from using my PC. No one will tell me what they regard as faulty/working or their testing methodology so I can't test it myself before sending it off. I'm just stuck with a card that is a bit noisier and hotter than I was expecting.

You're within the 14 day DSR so if he isn't happy with it send it back.

That`s what I did.
I would try with you card, ask OCUK if it is possible.

Are these supposed to be quiet? How loud is RMA loud?

Is any of this true:

The greatly improved overclocking potential and stability increases overclocking performance up to 37.5%! The highly acclaimed Twin Frozr III thermal design with 8cm Propeller Blades fan setup for 20% more air flow and 8mm SuperPipe technology is used for cooling. Fan noise of just 30dB at full load provides gamers the most silence user experience, while MSI Military Class II components are used to give the highest quality and stability.

Yep, but as Devrij temps and fan noise its like a refrence cooling.
So on my logic theres something wrong with that card. Thats why I said to him to try RMA it, if you still have your 14 days satisfaction than return it under that.

In my experience, no. It's hot, loud, and doesn't overclock well as a result. I don't mind getting a bad overclocker. That's just luck of the draw, but the noise and heat are a PITA. It's not crazy hot (eg 90C) , so I don't know if it's RMA hot yet.

Since none of the people I've asked in the CS forum will give me an answer on what is "RMA hot/loud", I've submitted a webnote asking what their determining factors/test methods/etc are. I don't fancy spending a lot on postage/testing to find it returned in the same condition after a week or longer of down-time, so I want to do as much testing at home before wasting money/time on the RMA process. Although we may consider it too hot, they may not.

If I was inside the 14 days I would've returned it, but I just thought 7950s were hot cards and didn't look into it fully until it was too late (not a mistake I'll be making in the future). Some people are getting great temps and clocks out of the same card, but frankly I wouldn't want the same card again unless it had been tested first.

Thats bad, well is it from OCUK? Email them and ask about it.

I posted in the CS forum, I was told they would need to test it to determine if it was faulty (perfectly reasonable), and I then asked how they would test it so I could be certain of the condition of my card before sending it off. After all, why would I send my card off if I knew my card would be determined "no fault found"? I never got a response. After the issue was brought up by someone else in the MSI weekend thread (not by me), I asked Gibbo what the determining factors were in the faulty cards they'd received. No answer there (fair enough, not the CS forum). Sent a webnote, not heard back yet. So yeah, I have.

I've spent nearly £4k with OcUK, and they've always had great CS, so this is a bit of a one-off situation, and the card is in a sort of twilight zone in terms of whether it's faulty or not so I'm waiting for some clarity on the issue. I'm sure if there IS an issue with it, they'll sort it out. If not, and this is normal, then they're just rubbish cards compared to the other OEMs' and I can't really recommend them.
