Have you swapped your MSI 7950?

Since youve been loyal ask them to swap it out its not even old, it does seem dodgy i would NOT be happy with that at all.

The message seems to be that they'll be testing it, and that's the determining factor as to whether I can replace it or get stuck with it (plus postage costs and down-time). So I want more info on the tests. I don't expect any special treatment (there are plenty of customers spending the same or much more with them), so I'll just see how they respond.

Well, I heard back from my webnote. I wrote:
My idle and load temps seem quite hot. I had assumed this was normal until reading some other people's temps for the same card (or other OEM brands). I have a full tower case with good cooling so I wanted to find out what temperatures are considered normal for both stock and overclocked use to compare mine to.

Some people are giving temps of"max temp 64c, 1250\1250 1.25v 47%fan" whereas I get higher temps at stock with higher fan speeds running the same benchmark.

Obviously, you would need to test the card yourself to determine a fault, but to avoid wasting my money and your time, if you could tell me what temps you consider normal for this card and in what test conditions, I can replicate them at home to determine if it's worth an RMA.

My reference cooler 5850 ran cooler and quieter with a hefty overclock and 2 years of dust in it, soI guess I was expecting more of an aftermarket cooling solution. I'd be happy to provide some afterburner screenshots if that helps you determine a fault.

Thanks for your time,
Dev

Webnote reply:
Graphics cards can run up to about 90c before they start to fail. I would recommend you run heaven benchmark and furmark on extreme settings and also run MSI afterburner in the background to monitor GPU temps.

Regards,

Luke Pointon

So that kinda missed my point. Either that or they're saying that as long as it runs below 90C it isn't faulty. I would have different definitions of what to expect from different products, but if that is how they judge working/not working then I'm stuck with it. There's no way to reply to a webnote reply besides sending a new webnote, so I'm at the point where I may need to just ring and have a chat. I was hoping my fact-finding efforts wouldn't cost me anything, but it might be worthwhile.

That response is totally unsatisfactory. The issue isn't will the card fail, but does it fit it's description - i.e. aftermarket cooler for lower temps, quieter operation and overclocking headroom. I fear with someone like the guy who responded to you checking the card there would be no chance of a successful RMA.

5UB is usually very hot on customer service so maybe send something his way.

Wondering if I can RMA the card and if no fault found rely on DSR so they don't return it to me. That way if fault found they pay postage, and if no fault found I only pay for it one way (i.e. back to them and they keep it).

Yeah, I enquired further with another webnote, asking for specifics, and was told "if the card is too hot or too loud we will process it through". Again, I feel the point has been missed. If the card is "too" any thing it is clearly faulty so what good is it telling me that? I'll call and ask someone tomorrow on my lunch. Perhaps I'll be able to explain it more clearly.

First I need to establish whether I CAN choose. It's proving more difficult than I thought it would.

:O the x2 is gone? That didnt last long then...Kinda liked that card imo:D

Id go for the WF if it was me...but that was £239 a couple days ago now its gone up...

Post in the customer service section, ask for Bailey and or 5UB, they sorted me out with the X2s. I took the cards in for a straight swap and had a chat with Bailey while they swapped them over in the warehouse.

Was a very pain-free experience. :D

Why did you swap your x2s?

Yeah, usually 5UB answers the threads, but this time it was someone else. I may have another go in there.

I mean when I swapped my TF3s to X2s. I've still got the X2s and they're great. I even prefer their form-factor a bit more since they're not as thick.

The TF3s were just over 2 slots deep so I couldn't fit my PCI-E TV card in, it fits fine with the X2s.

I titled my thread "FAO 5UB" I also sent him a trust message about it too.

I personally think you will be lucky to get an RMA with the card. They will probably test in a test bed (open air, so lower temps) and if the card runs all tests with no crashes or artifacts it will probably be deemed as not faulty. A DSR of course would be ideal, but you are out of time now is that correct?

I wish you all the best with an exchange of course, as no-one should be left with a card they are unhappy with, hopefully 5UB sill sort you out. If you get your card returned though I would recommend replacing the thermal paste with some quality stuff, and reseating the cooler. This seems to drop peoples temps a decent amount. good luck :)

This is what I'm expecting also. I've tested it with the side panel off and 2 120mm fans blowing at my card, and overclocked it still gets very toasty. Problem is, at stock it runs about 63C in heaven at 58% fans, so at stock it's fine. I'm perfectly happy to accept my lot if 5UB says "sorry mate, it's within reasonable temps so we can't do anything". After all, we've all bought something at some point only to realise we should have got a different one.

I just find it hard to believe that a 17C difference between my card and someone else's, when they have a higher overclock and lower fan speeds, is normal.
