Have you swapped your MSI 7950?

As above, except furmark is pointless as it only offers unrealistically high temps. I only use it for stability testing and even then it isn't great. Most of us have been testing with heaven, although I get higher temps from some games. It'll make for a good comparison though.

Your idle core clock should be 300mhz, and will jump up to 880 under load. Either way, 40C is a bit hotter than the "cool" guys on here are getting at 300mhz.

Sorry for the double post but wanted to make sure this is clear from my previous one.

I have run a benchmark test on Heaven with GPU load 100% the whole time. This gave a max temp of 62 C. How does that compare?

Also, my fan speed was only 46%. Why would this not increase under load?

Those temps look fine to me, although heaven doesn't give me very high temps either.. Your fan speed would increase, but you want it slow because it starts getting noisy at 60%

My TF3 is now back with OCUK and I believe am getting a credit against another one. Just need to decide on the replacement brnd - if a cool TF3 could be guaranteed I would get another one as it fits my case, but will be swapping for Gigabyte WF most likely and a hacksaw blade for the case.

Did a few more tests last night. Stock volts and clocks, 2 loops of heaven brought me to 67C at 46% fans. I suppose for stock, that's acceptable temps, even if not as cool as I had hoped.

1100/1350 at 1.1V got me to 78C at 70% fans. It seems like a hell of an increase for a small voltage bump. Funnily enough, if I lock the fan speed to 60%, which is much quieter, the temps don't go much higher. It's like fan speed doesn't make as much of a difference as it did on my 5850 reference cooler.

Are idle temps of around 40 C acceptable?

I have not seen the idle temp go below 40 on my card. Will this affect the life of it?

Idle temps aren't a huge issue. Mine idles at 40C at 300/150 clocks. At 500/1350 (my actual idle clocks because I have dual monitors) I idle at 60-62C!

My card was delivered a week ago and I build my PC yesterday so haven't had time to do much testing but the card idles at 32°C and after an hour of Heaven, maxed at 62°C. So not all are bad in the latest batch.

You got a non-damaged card than! ;)

Is that using auto fan speed?

Mine just won't rise above 71 degrees whatever I have pushed it to (1200/1500 max tested so far).
The fanspeed obviously increases to limit that temperature level but I'm happy with that.

edit; just noticed you use two monitors so I guess I can't compare.

If u manage to get a 'working' msi card, is it as good or better/worse than the gigabyte?

I only ask as i am thinking of getting a 7950 for my 2560x1440 res monitor and the msi on this week only is really good value especially with 6 games that can sell off to lower it more. But if the gigabyte is literally a better card i wld just shell out for that.

They're effectively the same card. The Gigabyte will be slightly quieter the MSI should be slightly cooler.

Yeah auto. I've since set a custom profile that limits it to 60% fans until about 75C, at which point it goes up steeply. Playing BF3 got me to 78C at between 60-65% fans with my overclock. I think If I tried to overclock to 1200/1500 (what volts are you at btw?) then my card would melt.

EDIT: Interesting note, left my pc for an hour to watch TV, when my monitors go to sleep my clocks drop to the base 300/150, and my idle temp was 33C while everything was shut down.
