Having monthly English lessons on the forums?

2 questions:

1) How many people went over the OP with a fine tooth comb trying to find a mistake to pick up on?

2) OP, how many times did you check over your post to ensure you didn't make a mistake?

:D

Literally annoys me. I stopped someone in the middle of an anecdote when she said she literally wet herself. I made a fool of her for a few seconds "Did you really? What did people say? How did you mop it up?". I of course regretted it later, but it felt really good to verbally cut someone down.

Could and would really annoy me as well.

For example I'll be sitting here typing away and my Wife will pop her head around the door and say "Could you take the rubbish out?", to which I reply "Yes I could"

Twenty minutes later she will ask why the rubbish was not taken out and I reply but you only asked if I could do it not if I would do it. This usually results in much hilarity and the rubbish is thrown out - often at the same time as me !

A lot of users have utterly appalling English skills on these forums.

Tbh I think its more a case of this being the internet where grammar is optional, remember this is the place where "txtspk" (aka netspeak/wirespk, the language of the internet) actually originated from back in the days when mobile phones could only show 6-8 numbers.

In the majority of cases its not people having bad English its people not bothering to write an exam quality proof read piece because their posting on a discussion forum on the internet where speed/fluidity is most important.

This is an international forum and not everyone has English as their first language so getting your pants in a twist over a spelling mistake is sad in my eyes.

I think it's pretty fair to say most of the users are from the UK (OcUK) and I've seen others from outside the UK but they speak english too, but if it's not their first language then they'd be making different grammar mistakes that you'd expect.

Thread title should be changed to 'Those who need help with grammmar rant here'

But if no one cares then I'm sure no one would mind if we had quite a few members talking txt speak and slang. Brapp brapp :)

That made you feel good?

Can -vs- May

Could and would really annoy me as well. ...
In this context, I always think of "can" and "may"

Some years ago, I was on a Tube train in London with my then boss; we were standing in the aisle between the seats near the doors because we were due to change at the next station.

A very attractive woman got on and said to my boss "Can I get past?"

My boss looked at the backpack on the floor at her feet, turned to the woman and replied "No."

The woman then retorted angrily "I said can I get past please?" to which my boss smiled sweetly and answered "I know exactly what you said; I believe that what you meant to say was MAY I get past PLEASE?" as she leant backwards to let the woman scramble past. I was hugely embarrassed by the whole exchange.

We got off at the next stop and I asked my boss why she had been so pedantic. She said that if the woman had said please in the first place she would have let it go but that the combination of bad manners and ignorance had annoyed her.

I have never forgotten that lesson - it is remarkable how much leeway you can gain with a show of manners :)

can -> may and could -> would are alright-ish mistakes.

I suppose maybe I'm being bias as I use the former words most of the time.

Agreed that most of the time I'm being pedantic when it come to the Wife but hey, it's fun !!! :D

Props go to asim for not biting when people mention his rainbow coloured wiener and ability to collect high powered weapons in 3 minutes.

A lot of users have utterly appalling English skills on these forums. Most, if not all of these people aren't in school anymore, so they will probably live the rest of their lives not knowing the correct form. Would it not be a good idea to have monthly English grammar/punctuation lessons? If anybody is caught getting that month's lesson wrong then they are given an hour long ban or something?

I've already devised the first lesson as an example:

Lesson 1 - of, have.

It's extremely common for people to get mixed up with these. When speaking fast people usually say "should've" but when they write this down they seem to use "should have" because it sounds like the pronunciation of should've.

Bob should have paid attention at school.

aye nee bova gadgee,,were you born with a silver spoon in your gob.

Rather a lot of personal insults in this thread, careful people...

As for correcting the misuses of spelling and grammar, I agree. I type the same way everywhere as I would on a CV, personal statement and the like. Otherwise, how would you know if you made a sloppy mistake? It's good to keep in practice. ;)

I'd say regional sayings aren't that much of an annoyance. Like 'you was' for East Londoners and whatever you others have.

It's mainly the brought bought, they're there their and I can't think of any others at the moment :)
