Hayfever - Thread

This thread is massive so I made a small list of alternatives to try especially when the usual suspects like Cetirizine and Loratadine stop working. Obviously consult your GP just to be sure!

Tablets:
prednisolone
Fexofenadine (Telfast)
Acrivastine
Chlorphenamine Maleate (piriton)

Sprays:
Sterimar spray
Beconase spray
Nasal decongestant spray (also for allergies/hayfever)

I found my body had adapted to Cetirizine and Loratadine (tried for several days and no joy) took one Benadryl Acrivastine tablet and 70%-80 symptoms just vanished in 15 minutes so I kissed the packet, back to boots to buy one get one at half price they keep the 24 pack behind the counter though ! Shame they are pricey but hey it works. I use tesco or asdas £1 Nasal decongestant spray (hard to find in stock lately!) 2-3x per day and I can be almost human again. Will try Piriton tablets though since its cheaper next time.

How much is the 48 pack?

I just got 84 on a single prescription from my GP.

Sorry I edited it it was an actual 24 pack from boots that cost £7.89 and the 12 pack is £4.59, its pricey but boots got it currently on buy one and get 2nd at half price I just grabbed like 4 packs while the offer was there so im sorted for next 2-3 months, I can manage on 2 tablets per day they last 8hrs each you maybe able to just use one if not sever.

Did you get 84 tabs on a prescription of Acrivastine ?

I thought they could only be bought from beadryl...... if you got 84 that is excellent how much ?

Ok guys n girls, who's got the Hayfever kicking in? Not as bad as it can get but I'm already sneezing and the itching of eyes. I'm sure it's to do with the grass cutters, as I can walk through fields of yellow without a single problem :o

Cheap loratadine or cetirizine has been working perfectly for me this year. I just get the cheap Tesco stuff which has the same dose as the overpriced £7 rip off stuff. I've been paying £2 for over a months worth.

So I succumbed yesterday and got 12 tabs of Acrivastine for £4.90 from Boots.

Didn't work as advertised (15mins) but it did help alleviate majority of the problem yesterday evening. This morning was bad again, another tab before work, so far it's working and just popped another before I leave the office/factory environment where it's usually a lot better for my symptoms.

Do people visit their GP to get the prescription or do you need multiple visits to get them to prescribe? I've suffered Hayfever for the last 5 years and this year is the first time both cetirizine and loratadine failed me.

I might need to get a hamsterball and just roll to and from work. Damn Grass sex.

The only drugs that work for me is Acrivastine and using it with a couple of spray of Beconase a day. I also take the Acrivastine before bed, so it's fully in my system when I wake up and leave the house. Time it that way so it trials off when I get back in doors in the evening.

Well yesterday I finally got a telephone call from the doctor who did a phone consulation.

I told him I wanted fexofenadine (from the recommendation here) he had not heard of it and had to look it up. Anyways 5 mins later he said ok and also perscribed me some Sodium Cromoglicate eye drops too. He asked if I was home at day, I advised I was till 6pm but at 6pm I have to go out he said that ok and would get my perscription delivered, and he asked if I have to pay for them, I said yes. He said cash on delivery is fine.

Roll on 6pm, no delivery! I go out; anyway I checked my post box last night and they posted them for me but no details about how to pay etc. And the box has been not been ticked to say I have to pay.

No wonder the NHS is losing money!

I've just taken the first fexofenadine, lets hope they work. Today is the worst morning yet for me, took me 15mins to wash my eyes out in warm water after crawling to the bathroom blinded as I could not open my eyes due to my lashes being all matted together and dried up with gunk!

It's really vile! I look like a crack whore!

Eeek, hope you get that sorted out quick mate. I've been on the piriton which was doing the job up until last week, now I feel better when I just don't take it which is odd to me. Have I developed some sort of resistance to it? Had zero problems breathing last night and slept like a baby

Shouldn't do, you don't develop significant tolerance to antihistamines. Piriton is sedating which can make you feel pretty crappy.

You still need steroids Ace, that looks bloody awful.

Gunna give the fexofenadine a few days to kick in, if not joy after that I'm going to be straight back on the phone to the doctors again.

Another hayfever free day! Loving life lol. Seriously though, I have suffered to extremes since I was 13 (now 23), and finally something is working for me, it's just SO nice to be able to have relief from it.

Currently taking 120mg fexofenadine in the morning when I get up, then acrivastine every 6 hours after to keep it at bay in the evenings.

Last year it barely effected me at all and I may have had a tablet once every couple of weeks. Urgh.
