Hazro 24" S-IPS, micro review + chat

Look what I just found in the Eye-One match software! LUT calibration!

remember only certain monitors will let you actually calibrate the monitors hardware LUT, most will let you only alter your GFX card LUT

yeah i've tested some screens, like the Samsung XL20 for instance, where the calibration actually saves within a profile / preset mode on the screen itself. It's more for high end graphics screens where hardware LUT calibration is possible / necessary. That Match-One 3 software is very good though at achieving nice calibration results, just lacks any reporting features which are handy for reviewing

There is a reporting feature though!

Not as good as Lacie Blue Eye software but still gives you a basic rundown !

Just a Q though, what is the diff between dE94 and dE2000 ?

Today I tested out Component connectivity with the XBOX360 and have to say it's very very good. Nice and sharp and no problem with 1:1 mapping to 1920x1080p.

The only downside is as a PC gamer I instantly noticed many of the lower quality textures in GTA4 (mainly in character models but also walls etc). Since it's not a native 1080p game there's resizing going on ingame to fill the screen res.

PC gaming *** !

yeah, it gives you some at least in the latest ver, just meant it wasnt as "pretty" as the LaCie software :) dE94 and dE2000 are differing standards obv, and i believe 94 is regarded more highly for some reason....will try and dig out the explanation and info for you.

edit: here should help: http://www.colorwiki.com/wiki/Delta_E:_The_Color_Difference

This monitor looks awesome, but Im wondering is there anymore information on how well it is in pc games, particular first person shooters such as Counterstrike Source? Does the input lag really make that much of a difference if your used to a CRT?

Im thinking of finally ditching the crt and going for a flat panel for ease of use at LANs but its turning out quite difficult to decide! I am a graphic designer as well as a gamer (I would say pretty hardcore gamer) and it seems to get both together is a major feat not yet perfected in flatpanel technology! Or does this particular monitor do the business?

Im in the same boat.
Ive had this CRT since 2000 and its starting to get a little blurry.

According to TFT central the Hazro 24" model has an average of 32 ms of input lag.

The way I look at it, is could you live with another 32ms added to your online / lan ping time ? Cos this is effectively what it will do.

You don't notice it in games, seriously...you should just find someone who has one and game on it to sample. Yiu could talk about it all day but you won't get any resolution out of it at all until you've actually used one!

I am a PC gamer for FPS games and have no issues with it, I also play 3rd person games and have dabbled in some racing without any issues. I also had the xbox360 in it with no issues.

How's the black depth? In the picture you took showing the monitor on but showing a completely black screen, it looks good. Probably better than this S-PVA I have here (faulty and going back for refund mind). Is it really like that?

Can't decide whether to go for the Hazro or Dell 2408.

Hazro

- S-IPS
- Nice aluminium casing
- Looks like basically no backlight bleed
- S-IPS apparently has worse black depth
- Has a few vista issues (still XP, but may to upgrade to Vista soon)
- 3 year warranty, after one year having to return to manufacturer.

Dell

- Apparently has a fair amount of issues with A00
- S-PVA which seems to lose black details when viewing head on
- Still looks good cosmetically
- Should have a better black depth
- Has more inputs
- Has 4 year warranty all of which is a next business day exchange
- Guaranteed no stuck pixels

Hmm...

I'm not sure whether to go for a 23" or a 24"...
Apparently the 23" has a 'worse' panel than the 24" but it has HDCP and I prefer the lower dot pitch... Also it's about £40 cheaper.

It's the same panel as that used in the Apple Cinema Display 23" model. The 23" S-IPS are being phased out by LG.Philips as they've realised that everyone and their dog has standardised on the 24" form factor.

It's a slightly outdated panel for sure, but it's still miles ahead of a TN and all but the very best *VA's quality wise. Go try out an ACD for an idea of how it will handle (obvious disclaimer that electronics used to drive it will cause some differences).

As far as the comment about black depth goes, it may be not as good as a *VA, but then again, *VA's have the black crush. I've not found it problematic on mine.

Is black crush where dark greys and black seem to blend in when viewed head on?

Also, does anyone know if the Hazro's have the 'TW Polarizer'? Supposed to eliminate glow from angles, and seems to make blacks look better from what I can tell.

If it has this TW polarizer thing, I think I know what I am going to get :)

edit - Just found this on the Hazro site. I am guessing that's the one... " Surface Treatment: Hard coating(3H), Anti-glare treatment of the front polariser ". I've also found a few references to the Hazro having this TW polarizer thing. I'm just gonna buy it and hope for the best I think.

yeah, that's generally what people are referring to

no, it doesn't i dont think, just standard anti reflective coating. TW filters are sometimes used in high end pro graphics displays (NEC 2690WUXi for example)

OK I realised after doing some searching on the eye-one display 2 that I've been calibrating wrong! I would take the unit out the box and begin calibrating right away but the i1d2 should ideally be warmed up by connecting it up and placing it on the screen for at least 20-30 mins so it warms up to the screen (which should also have been on for at least 30mins prior).

After doing this colours are better yet, the whites are whiter but not less detailed and everything looks more window like colour wise.

I have brightness set to 44 and Contrast on the default 68 whilst RGB values are 49, 47, 36. I told Eye-One Match to adjust to 6500K for the above and left luminance unchanged as I find it comfortable so no need to change.

After a week of 'warm up' i find the monitor to look far better than when i first got it. perhaps the cables and the monitor itself are better run in. Things just look much better. On the tests, i can now see most of the darkest dark boxes, whilst not the whitest of whites.

Overall, I have to say I'm pleased with my purchase - having upgraded from my Dell 2407 A02 which I think I got a good unit.

My Hazo's contrast is set at 44 whilst brightness is 73 based on my Huey pro's test screen ie. black rings within blacks and white within white. I find my current result (after Huey Pro) seems to show blacks better than whites, the tones graduations are smoooooth and the colours are very good.

Worth noting though - my wife preferred the look of my old Dell to the Hazro! go figure!
