Helicopter ditches in North Sea (Ditching Aug23 2013) - Public Inquiry

A lot of the seats face seats opposite them so you end up having to put your legs inbetween the legs of the person opposite in a your leg, his leg, your leg, his leg sort of way. If you're not at a window or door and it went down uncontrolled you're basically ****ed.

Urgh, sounds horrible. At least in a Dauphin you're all facing the same way.

Yip jokester, puma seating is balls and the size of most offshore workers these days is even more worrying when most cannot physically fit through an escape window.

That post was made after the last one but I'm fine this time around as well - I was in Amsterdam on my way back from Egypt when this one happened. The only danger I was in this time was from rioting nutters in Cairo. I dare say if I'd been shot, doofer would have said that was what I get paid big bucks for :rolleyes:

I've never liked Super Pumas. Not just because of their appalling safety record but for the reasons mentioned above. They're bloody uncomfortable things to travel in.

What utter pish. I'm a big guy and I never have any difficulty getting through the window in the HUET. You need to be incredibly fat not to be able to get through and there aren't that many people that size in the industry (apart from the Gulf of Mexico ;)). To say "most cannot physically fit through an escape window" is plain stupid.

You haven't seen the shift I work with then Stan ;) If I wasn't first through the window I wouldn't fancy my chances in a 225 with the crew I fly out with :D

Most, yeah I was exaggerating.

But you haven't seen the size of some of the guys I've been on helis with, it makes me wonder sometimes how some of them get a medical. Add on a survival suit and lap jacket and those big windows really arnt soon big after all.

Anyway, going off on a pointless tangent here.
 
To be honest, the big windows are ok, but I wouldn't fancy my chances going out one of the small windows and I'm average build!

im a big bugger 6`5" and not slim.... I always sat by the door on one of them choppers... I hated them. A smooth ride but sardine cans.

I remember the helideck officer shouting in my ear once... "you're by the door cos if you ditch at least you will have a chance to get out"

Yes i fitted through a window multiple times in training but i wouldn't wanna do it in real sea conditions.,
 
Is there any other routes? Does no technical problem rule out under fuelling and other ground staff issues?
I guess possibly under fuelling could be an issue. They must have some information that points to something other than the aircraft failing so early for them to come out and say that, I'm guessing from the data/voice recorders.
 
Looks like we can rule gearbox failure out.

Black Box indicates that both engines were delivering power up until the point of impact. Airspeed reduced to less than 30kts and then rate of decent increased rapidly. No signs as yet of technical failures.
 
Not going to mean much, almost every Offshire worker has basically just shunned the aircraft as of now.

Quite frankly when a man dies because he is...stuck due to it being cramped, its time to start thinking about all those billions of profits you can use to deal with it.
