I know I'm about 3 years too late but I want to get into counterstrike.
I'm going to start playing it with a mate from work but I'm a bit confused over the best and cheapest way to start playing it.
Do I just buy it from an online shop or can I download it and whats this steam about and do I have to buy that too?

Clueless

Thanks for that dloading it now.
Good to hear, i used to play it 24/7 lol. Its hard at first, but what i did when i started was follow somebody (stay far enough away so you don't annoy them) and just see where they go/hide etc :)

which do you play zefan?

Neither at the moment due to this uni connection.

I played 1.6 mainly though. Only played source for about a week and it was just underwhelming. It is a damn good game, but when compared to the crispness and sort of "purity" cs holds it just doesn't cut it.

CSS is fun if you find the right community. Otherwise it's full of tardfaced gits.
The same can be said for 1.6 :(

I'm getting absolutely reamed.
Haven't even got a clue how to setup the guns at the start of the game.
I've got no instructions as it was a steam download.

Don't try and buy a gun every round, particularly on the larger public servers you can afford to spend a couple rounds saving money. Put faith in your trusty standard pistol and if you follow the path most of your teammates take more often than not you'll run across a dead body and pick up their gun.

Once you have about $3500+ it's usually a safe bet to press the 'Autobuy' option (on the right side of the buy screen). This will give you an M4 as a Counter-terrorist or AK as a Terrorist - these are 2 of the most used weapons in the game so get used to using them. You may want to supplement your equipment with a flash or smoke grenade, but observe how others use them (i.e. don't smoke infront of YOUR awpers (snipers) and don't flash infront of YOUR teammates).

Aside from an M4 or AK, 2 other frequently used and useful weapons are the MP5 sub-machine gun which is good for closer gunfights and is often bought when someone needs a gun but only has about $2000. Another is the AWP sniper rifle, at $4750 you won't be able to afford it much if you're a frequent dier, and will take a while to become good at, but it can be an awesome gun.

BTW, I'm basing this on normal priced servers, dynamic price servers (which I don't go on and if I'm correct are few and far between) have constantly varying prices so buying weapons, kevlar, grenades will take a bit of time.

Oh, and if you're on Dust2 and a Terrorist, if you can't buy quickly to begin with, make sure you're not in line with the middle double doors before you bring up the 'buy' screen - otherwise you'll be an easy pick for Counter-terrorist snipers.

Not a great deal to know really when it comes to playing the game. Terrorists plant a bomb CTs have to stop them planting all together or defuse the bomb. Its all practice, finding the right sensitivity for yourself etc.

This your first FPS online game or not? Do you know about the HL netcode? Mouse accel? Which is a preference thing but I really would recommend it turned off.

I'll try to keep checking this thread.

cs is what playing online is all about. be patient, and you will enjoy.

check out the GunGame mod (by joining a gungame server) for weapons practice. great fun.l

When was beta 1 released, its more then a few years now.

If your new then backup someone else up. Dont step on their shadow or block them just cover their six :) You should pick up a few kills and certainly a few tips along the way

Stay away from the sniper rifles for the first month, as a beginner your not going to kill much with a sniper rifle + your going to die lots.

I suggest building up your motivation by buying a fast firing gun such as an MP5, stick close to your Team Mate in front of you, and try to get in close to the enemy. Don’t attempt to kill someone long range with MP5, you will get owned! Unless your enemy has a worse gun or is running/low health etc

Don’t be Rambo and try to out skill players that have been playing for years you’re going to get disheartened and fed up with getting killed in the first 10 seconds of each round.

Don’t waste money buying pistols, save up for a proper rifle, its difficult to kill the enemy with a pistol especially if there firing back with a rifle, also your new so your aim isn’t going to be awesome. I recommend pursuing the short range, fast firing battles (look for bottle necks in the map, top left) is your best bet to build confidence and learn the map/guns/skills. :p
