This debate has raged on for about 36 years since Deep Purple bought out a single called Fireball and it concerns the drum intro - Fireball Intro
It is played by the amazing Ian Paice who in my opinion walked all over the likes of John Bonham.
Now people have said for decades that you can't do that intro without a double bass drum but Ian Paice never used a double bass drum and nobody had invented the double bass pedal yet.
So listen to the MP3 and tell me what you think.

(I have actually found the 100% definitive answer after 36 years but I would like to hear your opinions please).

I've heard faster bass drum parts done with a single bass pedal.

Definetly single bass drum pedal.

Double.

One of the few songs he recorded with a double.

Ian Paice has some crazy hands though, some incredibly clean and fluid chops, especially on the song 'Burn'

Very underrated, blows Bonham, Moon, Baker out of the water IMO

Wikipedia says of Ian Paice:
A devotee of Ludwig kits during the seventies, he switched to Pearl in the 1980's, which he still plays. He also prefers a single bass drum set-up, both live and in the studio. One of the few exceptions is on the Paice tour-de-force and Purple charting single 'Fireball', probably the finest example of Ian's virtuoso technique. Recommended albums that best display Paice's talents are Deep Purple's '`Made in Japan' and 'Machine Head'.
I know Wikipedia is edited by regular people, but their must be some kind of source for it to be stated like that?

Thanks for the replies because this has been raging on for some years and the 'internet' cannot be trusted all the time.

I got my hands on the Live In Denmark 1972 DVD yesterday and here is the proof -

After the last song the roadies come on and fit another bass drum so that he can do Fireball.
I can't wait until my mates find out because most of them said it was a single pedal because he's that good.

A drum warrior competition would make Neon a happy bunny.

I think it's good having it all combined into one. People should submit other kinds of music too, it'd make it a bit more interesting.

I literally have trouble stringing half a dozen notes together. I'm not joking either.

I'm sure you can play better than me - give it a go.

i know you're not joking - but you have the creative talent to actually do something with those half a dozen notes. most of the stuff in your tracks was sequenced i think you said, and its done pretty damn well. i put those tracks onto my mp3 player and listened to them for ages.
