You really need to follow the beginners guide in this forum, it helped me back in the day.

The trick is, up the CPU by a few mhz, then boot into windows and run a stress test for an hour or so. If its stable, go back and up the FSB by a bit again, until the stress test kills ya machine (crashes the pc, BSODS or the stress test just says it died), then when that happens you up the voltage to your cpu and try again (never up the voltage that much, don;t want to fry the cpu).

when you run the stres test ALWAYS have core temp or real temp running and keep an eye on your temps, if they get to high then you may want to consider knocking the fsb down a bit and the volts.

Once you are at a point where you think you can;t go any further, run the stress test for several hours (I do it for 12 [over night]) and if you are still running the next day, chances are you are good to go.

That's how I've always done it, but I haven;t clocked a PC for a while as I am on OS X now, but I just got a new gaming rig so will be going thru it again. Its great fun finding the peak you can get your CPU at, then you move on to ya RAM!

I've never used prime95, I've only used orthos, so cant help with that atm. However, Orthos is a bit dated now, so I will prob have to have a go at that.

Read the beginners guide, its great!

would use prime95 for quad core as it will run four test threads where as I believe orthos only runs two?

15 mins should be fine to test inital stability.. once you get to your desired clock run it for a good few hours... if a core fails then you will need to up the vcore in your BIOS.. use coretemp to monitor temps.. anything up to 75c load is fine..

Alternativly you can run IBT (Intel Burn Test) this will really stress your CPU and RAM... I find running 20 1024mb tests generally means 8 hours prime95 small ffts stable.. I am yet to pass IBT and fail prime95.. if you search for Intel Burn Test I have a thread on it here somewhere

now running prime but the temps seem to of shot up they are 90 90 75 75 100% load i have stopped till i get advise from you guys no errors or warnings? which one on prime do you run first?

should i set it back to stock settings and leave it lol i have read and read but without being told what to set ect im lost and with the temps that high surley im doing something wrong not very clued up with tech talk lol unless someone could help with it im at a loss must be my age hehe!!

Not easy to blow your pc up by overclock those unless you go for LN2 or phase. Your P5Q-Pro so easy to clock you cpu to @ least 3.6Gz. Those temp you post not high because your Freezer pro not kick in when you @ 100% load.

ok thats good to hear then i got pretty worried when it shot up like that,i will try again later then so i do the same again up fsb to 335 and run prime for a hour then increase the fsb a bit more or not what you reckon be the best way/settings then would love to get to 3.6,also what should i do about my ram(corsair dominator 4gb 1066mhz pc2 8500 c5) leave that at stock, not sure how i do that bit so any help would be great.

You want to make the FSB:dram ratio as slow as possible so you can be sure that its the cpu over clock thats either/stable or unstable it will be best to slacken the Latency timeings too something like 5-5-5-20 shoudl be ok.

yes remember what the maxium voltage you want to put through the chip and dont exceed that.

use the search function in the Overclock threads and see what settings other Q6600 owns are using then try and match it roughly, they will list it with number against the names so it should b clear to see.

i have ran prime for 1hr at 3.005.56mhz and all is well no faults or errors what should i do now,up the fsb a bit more and see how it goes? what about the ram its changed from 1:1 fsb:dram to 4:5 do i need to adjust anything there if so where on bios?

See my last post post #30

Just found these settings for you:
Q6600 @ 3.0Ghz
vcore 1.31v
RAM 667Mhz
Timings 4:4:4:12
RAM voltage Auto

on your last screen shot i saw u had a lower v core than this so thats good i would/will always manualy enter the ram voltage that is stated on the lable on the ram jsut to be safe you can increase it if you oc your ram but that depends on what ram you are running.

It looks good but i would try and keep your core volts as low as poss the lower they are, and stable the higher a oc you can get depenant on other things.

i tried the above settings from the othe post went up to 3.6ghz bit scarey coz i dont know if it would handle it i did prime test for 1hr all was fine, but thought i would take it back to stock until you lot had a look at the above settings can my cpu really go to 3.6 not tested it on blend coz wanted to make sure first what you recommened?

The reason id say you hit 3.6 was due to not changing the cpu ratio (multiplier) to 8x. in the settings you posted above it shows 8, 8x400 fsb for 3200mhz. your multiplier was probly on its default of 9, 9x400fsb, 3600. What sort of voltage where you using for the cpu.

CPU Voltage: 1.34375 so whats recommended what the ideal overclock for me i just followed the other post as he had same spec as me,any info like above i can follow that be great

each CPU is different.. decide on the clock that you want and then work towards it.. once you have reached that speed you can play about a bit and tweak it

1.35v ish is totaly fine voltage wise... just make sure your temps keep under 75c in prime95 small ffts load
