Hiking, backpacking, trekking, mountaineering...

Very nice pictures and how do people do these climbs, how have you found people to do it with you? Are there hiking groups? But surly most groups are local so how would that work with hiking.

I mostly go solo as I enjoy the solitude. In avalanche terrain I try to hook up with at most 1 or 2 other people (or ski very conservative lines). In the mountains you shouldn't have a group of more than 3-4 people at the most.

Well on my own ATM, had a good day.

Moel Eilio, Foel Gron, Moel Cynghorion then over to the ranger path & up Snowdon, then down Llanberis path, about 15 mile circular route to the B&B I'm in. Very sore now.

Could see sod all up the top of snowdon, just a wall of white, top of Moel Eilio wasn't much better. Mixed weather drizzle and dense cloud, to full on sunshine and according to weather forecast 30mph winds but it felt more than that in some places.

Once I had drop down a bit from Eilio and starting to come below the cloud level

On the rangers path, sun decided to come play for about 5mins

Just after the ranger and Llanberis paths join, even worse as you went up higher.

Bit of sun on the way down

Well as the football season has finished, theres no F1 on and the weather is meant to be awesome I'm out on my first wild camp of 2013 this weekend! Going out for a mooch around the southern Carneddau to test out my new sleeping bag! :D

Going to go to Taunton leisure tomorrow see if I can find some new walking boots, is there anything I should know/tips etc, or will they just guide me through and make sure they fit properly!

Any recommendations for a good lightweight tent? Looking at less than 2kg for a 2 man 3 season tent.

At the moment the hyper T20 looks good http://www.lightwave.uk.com/products/tents/hyper-tents but pretty expensive!

I recently picked up a Nordisk Telemark 2 which is pretty decent. May be a little cosy for 2 people but its ok when you fully expand the inner sleeping part. Only weighs 980g as well.

The other options I considered were the Vaude Powerlizard and the Luxe Lightwave. The Luxe looked pretty good, more space than most, £200 and only 1.27kg as well.

Banshee 300 could be a good compromise. As already mentioned, the Banshees are great tents at excellent value. A little over 2kg, however, we tend to break the weight out between the two of us.

The Banshee 200 comes in around 2.14kg and is excellent value, but it's a bit of a squeeze for two people.

I've got the Vaude Power Lizard.. Very roomy, packs down impressively small and weighs about 1kg all in! :D

This is it packed next to my sleeping bag.. Squashes down a bit smaller than that if I take the poles out and stash them in my bag separately.

What sleeping bag is that out of interest? I'm guessing its one of the Rab ones? Need a new one myself, my ME down bag is awesome but its huge! Need something a little bit smaller.

Rab Neutrino 200, rated down to 2C, treated myself to it last week. Was torn between that and one of the PHD bags but by the time you added a zip and baffles etc to the PHD ones they came out just as heavy but twice the price!

I used it for the first time last night just off the summit of Carnedd Llewelyn at about 850m. The water was iced up in my water bottle outside my tent but the bag kept me nice and toasty inside!

I met two guys on my way down and they were determined I didn't have enough kit with me to camp. They were both lugging massive 50-60l packs around and there was me with my 26l pack on.

Hey guys, where would be good for a relatively inexperienced small group to hiking this summer within the UK?

Ideally looking for an excuse to get away for a few days and have something to do! :)

Cool cheers. I'm tempted by the Neutrino 400 which may be a little bigger. The PHD ones do look good though, the Minimus especially as its tiny, only problem is I don't know how warm it'd be. I think the price is pretty similar between that and the neutrino though..

Depends how many days ? Ben lomand is fairly safe if you're inexperienced :)

Can stay at luss, which is quiet pretty.

My new backpacking pack is a Montane Ultra 22 which fits everything I need for a night or two or more, including the sleep matt. ;) My base weight is now under 10lbs, and I don't really feel like I'm roughing it at all. :)

Me with my ultralight backpacking setup near Hadriands Wall a few weeks ago;

Our MLD Supermid nestled into the trees at Kielder last weekend. Big enough for 4 people at about 700g weight, not including stakes;

It's more like Ultra Light Weight Glamping! :D

Any one done the Brecon Way?

http://www.gps-routes.co.uk/routes/home.nsf/RoutesLinksWalks/brecon-beacons-way-walking-route

Not sure if to attempt this or just spend a few deays mountain climbing in the brecons.
Interested in how long it took you, accommodation etc.

Hadn't actually heard of it before but it looks pretty decent. May have to put it on the list to do. From that page there is a link to another site that has some recommendations for accommodation etc but to be honest, I'd probably just camp if I were to do it.

We're looking for something a little roomier TBH, I'm 6"2 so it needs to be long to, which is why I liked the T20 so much, it had an extra 20 cm of length compared to many.

Banshee 300 could be a good compromise. As already mentioned, the Banshees are great tents at excellent value. A little over 2kg, however, we tend to break the weight out between the two of us.

TBH the Banshee 300 is what it is, a cheap tent. Materials and weight just aren't something I'm looking for.

We had a look at another 2 tents today, the MSR Hubba Hubba HP and the Hilliberg Anjan 2. The Hubba Hubba HP came away the favourite TBH, the Hilly was nice but we both liked the idea of a tent that doesn't rely on on pegs to hold it up. I've also read reviews on the Anjan that the fly just isn't long enough, there's a 6" gap between it and the ground*, same with the MSR TBH which is a shame, especially if you want to store kit in the vestibule. The MSR is very tempting though, especially if using a home made silnyl groundsheet. The Lightwave is just my favourite at the moment though, longer and with a fly that goes down to the ground, its just a little loose and heavier than the other tents, but not by much.

*Had problems before with tents with flys high up and rain coming in sideways...

But if you're tall and requiring room for two, a super light weight 2-man tent is going to become a bit of a drag. I'd use one of those for myself alone, I'm 6'3. I wouldn't take my gf trekking and camping any distance with one. If you aren't going major distance and camping out for more than a night or two you have to ask yourself, why are you spending >£250 on a tiny tent. Where are you looking to camp out exactly? If it's somewhere alpine/mountainous/winter then I'd agree. Otherwise you're wasting your money on "all the gear...."
