Hiking, backpacking, trekking, mountaineering...

Beautifully Scary Mr Squirrel..

Very nice pictures, got to make you feel good just spending the day walking in surroundings like that..

Yeah it was really nice. Like I said the first 6km was really tough, we're not that fit so that didn't help. The last 3km was beautiful though, we've only lived here for 4 months and it's times like this that it really hits us where we are.

We made a video as well, although I swear quite a bit in it, mods, feel free to delete if not appropriate

Slow motion bird feeding at 13:00 :p

Haha, yeah my swimming ability (which is poor anyway) went out the window when I was in the cold water :)

The trail was really busy! There were probably around 100 cars in the car park, and up at the lake there were loads of people!

Weather is looking to stay decent so I might give crib goch a bash this Friday :)

Post up some pics if you do, I'm tempted to go there in a couple of weeks.

Off to walk 'The Ridgeway' this weekend, or at least the Eastern half of it anyway. Round about 40-45 miles I think and the Saturday is predicted to be hitting 31c! Going to be a toasty few days but it'd be rude not to make the most of this glorious weather.

Anyone had custom boots made?
My scarpas broke and not as comftable has I had hoped, fitted like a glove in the store and around the house. Bit tight on the big toe and the side of the foot, when doing long distance.

For the amount I'm walking would like something which fits, even if I'm balking at the price, especially the amount I paid on the scarpas, hopefully scarpa will fix it and I can recoup some money on ebay,

Been looking at these

$300 + $80 shipping and around 8 weeks to make.

I apply the same principal to boots & socks as I do my car tyres. They are the only things that connect me to the ground. So by that principal I don't mind what I pay for them. if they fit perfectly, make my life comfortable, will last a long time and prevent me having an injury I'll pay over the odds for them. I'd imagine they would be far more superior than an off the shelf pair?

Can you not find a company closer to home though? I'd be worried about them not fitting right and having to send them back.

Have you had a look at Altberg? You might find that a custom fitting (rather than making) would do the trick and I think they only charge an extra £35 or something. Based in Yorkshire.

I'd start off going to a decent boot shop and speaking to the guys there about some boots. If they were tight after long distances, it may be worth trying a brand that is slightly wider by default and going half a size up.

I wouldn't be spending that much on boots without trying them on first. From the pictures as well, I can't imagine those boots would be all that comfortable on long walks.

.

I did that to begin with and spent £225 on some scarpas.
Ive googled reviews and all the stuff I find highly rate them as the best boots they've ever had.

I have stumbled across them, but they aren't custom, so I doubt they will sell you two different sizes?
left is 1/2 a size smaller than the right.
where custom for same price £250 inc shipping, will be sized right for each foot.

I too would be cautious about spending best part of £300 getting something custom made, especially from the US.

Are you are trying (buying) boots on in the afternoon? Your feet swell a bit through the day, even more after a long (warm) day on the hills.

Everyone's feet are different though, could be amazing for one person and tripe for the next :) That's where a decent boot shop will be able to advise on what's suitable for your feet.

It was and they did. There still constrained to standard sizes though.
And have to go off your feedback, more than anything else. Where custom, actually goes of your foot, and more than just a couple of basic measurements.

If I could find a custom place in the uk for a sensible price, then I wouldn't consider things in the Us, but so far I haven't, was kind of hoping someone else would have gone down the custom route,

Had a look at their Q&A and they can enlarge boots by up to half a size, so it might work. They'll also manufacture split sizes for an extra £40. If you're ever in Yorkshire then I'd say they'd be worth talking to. Just an option, anyway.
