Holiday Cottage Deduction from Deposit

I didn't damage the set. I damaged one part of it. As comparison, many standard household insurance policies don't replace matching sets if one part of it is damaged.
They certainly do if the item is only available as a set. They would generally give you compensation for the whole set or replace the whole set like for like.

So you damaged the set. Also this isn't house insurance, comparison is irrelevant.

I feel like im now owed £15 for having read this thread!

Move on its £15.

Because if people didn't post threads like this on GD, then it would be a very boring place to visit. And I know how much people enjoy expressing their opinions and I enjoy reading them. No one forced you to read it. :p

Comparison is exactly how this works. It's an indication of what's reasonable and how the issue being discussed is handled by professionals, by businesses in the business of replacing damaged/lost items.

I mentioned the controls as I consider if a safety feature, to avoid such incidents and thought it unusual that this particular cooker didn't.

It's a plastic chopping board set, not a full dining table/chair set, or a suite. No real need for it to be matching. Even so, in my mind the old set now belongs to me
Why did you leave a plastic item on top of an electric hob? Surely that is the big safety issue here, not whether unnecessary locks had been put on the controls.

Ask her for the old set. But as I and others have mentioned, be prepared to pay for postage (if you are prepared to arrange for a courier to collect it), or to drive up there. Also once you have been petty and insisted on ownership then also be prepared to be charged storage and a disposal fee if you don't arrange for collection.

Sounds like your wife and you are a match made in heaven. I hope the pettiness skips a generation and your son isn't so entitled.
That's actually quite disturbing and a sad indication of your attitude/outlook, that you can read this thread, make such conclusions, and actually write/imply something so offensive.

Honestly, I would probably let it go and move on.

If there is no way to get the matching board separately, then it isn't that unreasonable to charge for the set.

OP is a drama queen, I cant' believe you'd even be moaning about it. You damaged an item part of a set. the property owner had to go out of their way to buy a new one and charged what sounds like cost price of the new set? How is there even an issue, you should be happy they didn't add an admin fee.
