Holidays 2022

I'm absolutely buzzing for my kayaking holiday to lofoten (Norway).

Just need to get all my cold weather kit!

Couldn't find a specific thread so thought I'd discuss in here. Latest article on Sky news:

"EasyJet has cancelled more than 200 flights to and from Gatwick between 28 May and 6 June."

Is it just me, but is anybody else confused how they can end up with this many flights needing to be cancelled. They're blaming recruitment issues and staff shortages following covid, which I can king of understand. But if you're having to cancel 200 flights, that's means they've obviously been taking peoples money and bookins for flights they just didn't have the staff for. How do you get in a position where you schedule a flight you know you don't have staff for ? All of the flights will have been cancelled and the schedule massively trimmed down during covid. So why then, when the sector started seeing activity again, did they schedule flights they never had the staff for, just hoped that they would, and only realised they didn't have the staff when nobody turned up on the day to board the plane ?
To me this has nothing to do with passengers, nothing to do with COVID, and squarely down to these airlines just straight up fraudulently taking peoples money for flights that never existed. I've been a department manager before had to juggle the rota of 5 separate teams. It surely can't be rocket science to know if you have the staff levels to staff how ever many flights they have that day ? Surely somebody should have taken a look at the rota a few weeks ago and realised there was nobody scheduled on these flights ?
I know that omicron is still a thing and people are still coming down with it and taking a few days off for (what is hopefully) flu like symptoms. But 200 flights isn't just having a few too many people off because of COVID, that's just selling tickets for flights that don't exist.

They need to drop the Covid quarantine for staff within work places (if your seriouly ill take time off of course) its had it day now its time to move on and get on with it.

It not the only problem though I was reading at Stansted experienced security officers have been layed off and replaced with people on cheaper contracts, but that pretty much the same everywhere these days.

Also I read another factor is Brexit people interviewed from cafe there they cant get staff as most have left and gone home, and the average brit thinks these jobs are below them.

30 minutes wait to get a table at spoons at Stansted!

Its an absoloute mess when you got the police telling you that your flight been cancelled!!!

A friend of mine works at EMA and has said that they cannot employ people. Jobs are being advertised and they are not getting applicants. He said the team of 6 that were there (in his area) before the pandemic has reduced to 3 due to employees getting better paid jobs / being laid off. However, the uncertainty around when the travel corridors were going to be opened didn't help with trying to recruit and train people earlier.
Most of this is down to the airport owners trying to save money, the airlines pay for a service (landing fee's etc) and if the airport facilities are not able to cope, then the cheapest thing sometimes for an airline to do is cancel flights due to fines/penalties for late departures, etc.

A friend was looking at jobs at EMA. Doesn’t help things if potential employees don’t have their own transport as buses are rubbish. However the London airports have buses all the time

Krakow for the Jubilee weekend, North west US and Canada in Aug/Sept, Hamburg in December. Earlier in the year we went to Florida and Brussels.

Gonna be nice to have some trips without any travel restrictions, and hopefully the US drop theirs in time for the August trip.
I love Krakow very nice place I went in 2013, I recommend going to a place called Pod Wawelem Kompania Kuflowa if you love your food.

This kind of makes sense, the job market is heavily in the favour of the jobseeker atm. Far more vacancies than applicants so it's no wonder they're struggling

What I don't get however is they don't have the staff to run these 200 flights, why schedule them, put them up for sale and take peoples money ? and why did they only know they didn't have the staff when people had already started arriving at the airport. Heck even if they cancelled the day before it would be bad and last minute, but not AS last minute as once everybody had turned up.

If you're going outside of school holidays I suspect you'll be fine. The reason they are struggling at the minute is that it's half term and the jubilee long bank holiday so lots of people have picked this week to go away.

If you're going after the 1st week in september when everybody is back at school & work i suspect you'll be fine. September also gives them more time to get staffing numbers increased than at present. The 3rd factor influencing the lack of staff is that it's only been in the last few months that air travel has opened up and people have felt able to fly places.

Flew out to Lanzarote on Saturday from Manchester T2. All was fine until we got on the plane. We were stuck for 90 minutes as loading luggage was taking a lot longer than normal due to broken belt. Counting ourselves lucky to have got here at all judging by the stories going round. We booked it before Christmas so no idea of how bad it would be.

5 nights 5 star all inclusive in Turkey, followed by a couple of weeks in Saffrica for Christmas.

First holiday since the pandemic hit, we're gonna be making up for lost time :D

Anyone know how it will be going to Turkey in September? (Antalya)

If you mean travelling it’s fine. Came back from Dalaman last week. Flight home not even required masks on the plane. Queues weren’t too bad either end, just a slight delay on the way home and slow baggage collection.

Does anyone know what time of the day these images in the media of people queuing for ages are taken?

My parents are flying from EMA on Monday at 7:15am. They have fast track due to mum’s mobility issues.

I’m flying out the same week that kids start their new school year.

Friend returned from Greece on Sunday. Birmingham airport used one carousel for four flights. When others were unused. Imagine 750-850 people crowding around one carousel is rather stupid. My friend’s son (autistic) had a meltdown. People were picking up luggage similar to theirs and not putting it back on the belt. People were shouting, that’s my case jumped over the belt.

Bloody shambles
