Holy Hell OcUK!!!

Is it actually worth getting one of these? Surely the Core2 6300 retail at £128incl is more bang for buck when you overclock it than the £100 oem 4000? Which is the better performing chip?

The Conroe is definatley more bang for buck however If you are already on Skt939 board and want a relativley cheap upgrade, its worth going for one of the latest 4000+ SD's. To go conroe you would have to spend more on a new motherboard and DDR2 Ram.

It would appear these chips prefer lower voltage, certainly I've had better results keeping the vcore near default(!)

I've seen some motherboards that will take Core2 (Conroe or Allendale - the 6300 is not Conroe) and use DDR rather than DDR2.

Last night i discoverered something that has made me rethink a lot of what i thought to be true. I was tinkering as normal when i suddenly realised i had never actually increased my ldt voltage (1.2v normal) and this could be why i couldnt got above 3.05ghz. When i upped this setting gradually till i reached the max of 1.5v my load and pmwic temps have plumeted by upto 10 degrees. Before i did this i felt these cpu's ran a tad hot with mine hitting about 52-55 (cpu 1.4v) depending on the room temperature, now its between 45-48. If anyone can confirm this and also if its possible to damage anything running with an ldt of 1.5v i would be greatful. For now tho im confused but happy :)

Never had to increase LDT for my cpu overclock, although I had to on my old Opteron 144, I guess it varies from setup to setup. Currently cpu vcore = 1.39, LDT = 1.28, NB = 1.5, vdimm = 2.6.

Still great value though, especially considering they all seem to do 3ghz on or around stock vcore.

Getting close to 3800 X2 prices though, which clock nicely too, though wouldn't beat the 4000+ in gaming.

The core2 is still surely better value for money? I don't get why prices increase as they phase them out at all.

Still leaves a nasty taste in your mouth though. Whats wrong with sticking to your margins especially if your reaching them already.

Problem being, with a chip that now nearly costs what a far superior one does - demands going to drop off quite rapidly.

I got mine when it was at its cheapest luckily :)

Now I have two machines with 4000+'s though I wish I`d paid £10 more and gotten a x2 3800+... it was a doh moment.

About an hour ago I put together my 3700+ KAB1E and MSI Neo2.

Only just started stress tesing but 28sec superpi seems good.

I'll keep you guys posted with whatever I eventually get

Sorry to be a bit miserable here guys - but all this fancy cooling, extreme temperatures and what not yet...... the core2 still beats them for super pi with a modest overclock.
