Home Assistant beginners

We're not with Octopus, so that's out. I removed the HandyHat HACS add-on this morning and replaced it with a newer fork: https://github.com/jonandel/ha-hildebrandglow-dcc

It's setup but it seems there's an issue somewhere upstream as I've not see any usage reported since around 8am this morning. I see the same gap in the Bright app as well, so doesn't appear to be my error.

I suspect the fall-back is to shell out for the Glow display at £70 (when it's back in stock) and then hit that from HA for the data.

This is the kind of dependency bought into the chain that I'm trying to avoid, have you ever monitored the uptime of an esp32 ?
The whole point from my original post is to have a rock solid 24/7 solution without any breaks in service

Can't say I've ever monitored the uptime of an ESP32 but equally I've not had the need to. That said, I just checked mine and they're showing as up since they were updated to ESPHome 2026.8.2 other the one that I pulled the cable for in error.

Has anyone using the Tapo TP110 smart-plugs or other brands gone to the effort of putting them on their own Wireless SSID/VLAN? Does the HA TP-Link/Tapo integration work properly if the HA server is in a different VLAN to the plugs?

Yes, work fine on my SSID which is bridged to a specific VLAN
Maybe your VLAN is restricting too much internet ? I recall needing to whitelist the Amazon echo before it wanted to play happily

Thanks for replying. I started building the new VLAN but then wondered if I was just making problems for myself in the future.

Are there any reliable options other than the Glow CAD (£70) for real-time electric monitoring into HA?

The Glowmrkt / Bright option, whilst free, isn't great. I look at my Bright app now and there's no data showing from 18:30 to 24:00 last night, then 3 30 minute reports from 00:30 to 01:30 this morning but nothing since.

I've just looked at a Shelly EM clamp but the power for the Shelly widget is the problem. Our meter is separate to our CU and there's no plugs (or other power source) there for the Shelly. It could obviously go where the CU is but then I'm paying an electrician to wire it in as there's no plug there either. At that point it costs more, so I might as well go for the Glow unit once it's back in stock.

I have a VLAN for IOT stuff. Generally avoid WiFi for stuff like that though and prefer ZigBee or similar.

You just have to have your router settings correct.

As far as I'm aware those really are your only options. Building a device to do clamping at the meter should only be low power though, so you might be able to run a long wire to power it.

Cheers. I finished setting up the VLAN. Had a slight snag adding the newest P110 plug to HA. It seems to be known issue with a new encryption the most recent firmware versions use (TPAP). Oddly, turning off 3rd party support in the Tapo app, waiting 20 seconds and then re-enabling it was the fix for me.

Thanks. Will hang fire for now and wait for the Glow.

@nst68 was reading this note Q4 and totally forgot to mention to also try using usb2 ports

I bought an adaptor with an aerial and a usb extension cable, installed Sendspin and Music Assistant, and it found my speaker straight away

I've been going mad on the energy front (new battery/solar install) including finding every smart socket I've ever had and got all of them in HA..

Still plenty of untracked, but that's cookers, lights, the odd thing people plug in around the house randomly..

In other news, Predbat for managing my battery/solar..
Jesus.. 11/10 for difficulty, mainly predbat not working.. turns out it was broken and couldn't put the Powerwall 3 in export mode, then charging failed.. I ended up doing my own automation listening to predbats status and manually commanding the PW3 to do that various things!

Still, its working now, but feels so hacked together.. Just installing the integrations and everything it needs was fine, but the documentation is laughably out of date and their templates broken, it needs polish and more donations!

oh, boiling water tap... I have one of them, didn't even think about adding that to be monitored. I want to do that now.

The biggest fail is the Knightsbridge double sockets, they are Tuya based and I replaced the double socket feeding a load of Ninja appliances (two air fryers and an espresso machine).. when the Mrs puts two air fryers on, its 2.8kW and the socket switches off.. so that will have to be changed to a normal socket and plug in another smart plug..

I've even got a 'spare tracker' which is for spot checking things, it's on the robot vacuum at the moment.. I bet that little sucka likes to gobble up the electricity in the early hours of the morning :D

Saddest one is surely my 'inlet fan' in the shed for drawing in cold air for the Powerwall 3 batteries in there..

Best value/reliability plugs so far are the Zigbee Sonoff ones, £9.80 each when on offer.. they do WiFi versions for the same price..

And with zigbee, you get the advantage of not needing an IP address from the router too. Mind you, I just checked, I only have 46 devices connected to my internal IP range.

What's connected to the microwave?

What's connected to the microwave?
Just a smart socket, it's a built in microwave, the socket is in the cupboard above.. I have another microwave that I will probably move that TUYA double socket to as there is no room for a smart plug behind it..

In essence, I have a number of devices able to measure power
Smart Plugs - Loads of brands, samsung, sonoff, shelly, amazon, etc..
Smart sockets - Those knightsbridge TUYA sockets, but a 2.8kW draw out of one side seems to trip that one I have with heavy load appliances, the smart sockets I have, most are rated at 16A, so they work better
Small Power Monitors - these fit in the back of a socket/fused/spur on similar, I have Shelly 1 Plus PM's, Sonoff Mini PMs, and Sonoff PM Relays for things like an outlet fan in the shed (for the Powerwall)
More bespoke monitors - I have some Shelly RGBW2 modules, they control and monitor power for LED strips in the kitchen..
The outdoor socket is the same knightsbridge/TUYA but they stick it in a plastic IP66 housing..

Do the Knightsbridge sockets do monitoring per socket, or across both?
