Yep, ZigBee is instant, and truly low energy. As you've seen the nature of WiFi doesn't really have room for ultra low energy battery type stuff.
Look at Ikea Tradfri stuff for a very cheap zigbee range - I've got lots of the Tradfri Shortcut buttons around the house for things!

I'd be very interested in how you got these to work, I have one which I got for testing but haven't had any luck getting it to work in HA as yet.

Yes you do - this is basically like the router in your house that all the other devices connect to.
I use ZHA, but think Z2M is very popular too!

Thanks for those links, strangely enough, when I went to look at the shortcut button in HA this evening, it worked just as it should and I have set it up in an automation to test it.
When I tried it before Christmas, it was found by HA but kept losing connection and not working with any automations or anything....I have no idea what is different but it seems to be working ok now.... which means I shall have to get myself some more to make one press triggers for lots of different things around my house!

Just seen that this was for me, yeah I have a Sonoff 3.0 USB dongle, which is working nicely with my other zigbee kit, just that the shortcut button wasn't working when I tried it before Xmas.

The basic idea is that mains powered devices like bulbs can act as repeaters to increase range. Have you got a decent spread of those?

The majority of ZigBee devices do repeat the signal and act as routers for other ZigBee devices to connect to, however there are some that don't. If your using z2m you can see a map of all connected devices and it'll show what is a router and what isn't.

Just started to use Node Red for automations and so far, it's much better as you can control it more.
