Home brewing kits ....

how long does the 2nd fermentation/settling in bottles take for ale? about to do first ever bottling of a cheap brewmaker kit that i have hopefully turbo charged to make about 5-5.5% (15 ltrs with 1 kg of enhancer and 150 grams of sugar)

i need to keep it in the shed to, helps if it explodes i understand.

It'll probably be carbonated within two weeks. Drinkable within 4. The longer the better generally. Be careful when deviating from instructions on kits, it's very easy to unbalance the flavour balance of hops / malts etc and strip it of flavour.

cheers. it was a free kit from a seller than recently wen bust and apparently tastes like **** so i followed someone elses go on another forum. he made it 10 ltrs with 1 kg and said it improved the flavour no end. if it's rubbish, i have not lost much.

i have a coopers pale ale and st peters ipa to brew as soon as i've bottled to put in my keg. :)

The coopers kits are generally great. My favourite is the IPA, a blinding session pint. I'm currently brewing a St Peters Golden Ale, it smells great so fingers crossed!

Just got my Pils in the FV, water bath all ready at 13 degrees with my temp controller. Letting the temp come down naturally until tonight and then it's going in the water bath!

I imagine it will only be heating slightly at night. I will leave it for 3 weeks in the garage and then start taking readings :)

Here's something interesting. I didn't Campden or Sorbate my last turbo cider made with LIDL cloudy apple juice figuring I usually drink it reasonably quickly so there's no point adding more chemicals. I drank about 1/2 the demijohn but I reckon it's been 3 weeks since I last touched it. It's mellowed quite a bit. The acidity has really dropped off and it's a lot softer to drink. I've bottled it and slammed it in the fridge, but I was surprised at that.

So I'm slowly trudging my way through this thread, but to cut to the chase can anyone recommend the 'go to' for a small setup. I don't drink much, but would like to be able to get a small stockpile of homebrew in the larder, say 10l batches? or is that too small to be viable?

I'd just go straight to a coopers kit, you get all the fermenting gear and bottles you need plus your first brew, there is a link in this thread to a home brew shop that lets you choose you beer too, you really can't go wrong.

It's 40 pints/23 litres so will give you a great start too.

My Cerveza is certainly getting better every week. 42 days now It's been conditioning at 18 degrees and I was really dissapointed with it after 30 days.

I think my plan from now will be not to touch a batch prior to 2 months.

Pils is fermenting nicely at a constant 13 degrees, water batch is working a treat. After 3 weeks I will remove it from the bath let it come up to room temp and take some readings :)

Then as soon as that's bottled back on with another cerveza but with 1kg of brewing sugar this time instead of BKE2.

If you look about, there are conversion factors to multiply cooler / warmer wort by to bring it to the temp needed for hydro readings.

Saves the hassle of bring temp up (which can also impart bad flavours on lagers / pils if still fermenting).

Thanks I will have a look around :)

I suppose I can just lift it out the water bath take a reading and whack it back in :)

Glad to hear it's tasting much better mate, iv actually finished mine, the last bottle was amazing lol but that seems to be the story of home brewing.

I need a second fv, I need to physically brew more than I can drink to get the stuff fully conditioned lol.
