Horizon: Zero Dawn [PS4]

One of my favourite games. Enjoy.

Save the DLC zone until the end, it’s tough.
Mine too.

Got the anniversary edition free for some reason (think it was a Sony COVID giveaway). Anyway, it sat on my PS4 for a long time, just didn't sound like my type of thing. Pfft metal dinosaurs...

Anyway, gave it a go. Wasn't too sure. Gave it time. Got hooked. Got into the story. Fell in love with it. Replayed and platinumned it.

Then I got HFW. The changes in gameplay annoyed me. Gave it time. Got hooked. Got into the story. Ended up loving that too.

So now going from being dubious about it I now have a HZD screen on my PS4 and the HFW DLC will be the first thing I pick up when I pick up a PS5.

My biggest regret is that I finished them all before my OLED arrived. They are such stunning games.

I wouldn't necessarily wait until the end of the main game to play Frozen Wilds, it does fit in quite nicely if you start it beforehand but the machines are much tougher from the get-go so you'll need to be a decent level first. That said they did design it quite well so that dialogue both in the DLC and the main game changes according to how far into the main story you are.

I did have a brief skim of the FW thread and decided it probably wouldn't be for me. I find the whole constant weapon / trap / ammo swapping quite a chore as it is and it sounds like its worse in the new one.

I think I actually used fewer in HFW, not sure now. I don't think I used the tripcaster at all (unless on a hunter ground or something) whereas on at least one HZD run-through I was spamming that constantly.

I found myself concentrating a lot more on weaknesses in FW.

It also sounded like most of the people in the thread were disappointed with it for various reasons. Not sure I want to tarnish the first which is fast becoming one of my favourite solo player games.

Currently replaying FW again (3rd time) via New Game+ so I can experience Burning Shores again as I am obsessed with the lore and who doesn’t like giant robot beasties?!

In each play through of FW I play literally with the same weapon load outs. So I maintain that FW’s combat was just too OTT and complex for its own good. They should have kept it similar to HZD.

Inventory/Weapon selecting is just boring as hell.

Additions like the pullcaster and the grappling hook were most welcome though.

Having said all that, it is a brilliant game once you can get past the combat overhaul.
