Horrific Crash on M6

We don't pay French road tax - we simply pay if we wish to use a Toll road. Just as a French citizen will pay additionally to use a toll road as well as paying their own road tax.

The french don't have a road tax, and I thought all of thier motorways were Tolls?

And just as the Irish trucker has to pay to use the M6 Toll or any of our Toll Bridges.

Those are private, can't be sure on the French ones, are they?

a) Irrelevent, principle remains same
b) Many toll bridges/tunnels are NOT private.

The French DO have a road tax but it's charged in a lump sum at the point of purchase of a new vehicle.

For private or public? I don't follow.

Whos aren't, ours? Or the French?

Yea, I've no idea why Muffin is sounding off against Irish Trucks. I dont really understand how amazing cross Euro MOT's and stuff change the fundamental safety flaws of driving large LHD vehicles in RHD countries.

I never implied Irish trucks were the same as LHD trucks safety wise, I was talking about the fact they go up and down our road without paying tax. LHD trucks causing the accidents are coming from the armpits of Europe with bald tyres and defective brakes, something needs to be done about that, what else can we do?

Poor people.

Tonight, someone (probably a grandparent) is going to be getting the news that their daughter/son and 3 grandchildren have all been killed. I don't know how anyone could ever deal with something like that.

And i also feel for the emergency services who have to see all of this, deliver the news and remain professional, calm and collected at the same time.

Ours.

What has this got to do with the accident on the M6?

Since when has Portugal ever been the 'armpit of Europe'?

More of a purchase tax then a road tax, and even a rebate of upto €700 for little 1.4 HDi 107's :/

The foreign plated trucks around here seem to drive to their own law, they use slip roads and roundabouts as laybys. Popped home for lunch last week to find a truck with polish plates parked over the front of a small family hatch-back, truck driver stood there scratching his head and car driver looking very unhappy (although unharmed).

So how is it a irrelevant? It's a private firm that made and investment and want a return. The French paid for the highways and want a return through a fee, our's do the same with the roads and want it back, through a tax, if we put tolls on the roads we would get a return for people who actually use it.

What are you getting at?

The situation is equal throughout Europe. Everyone pays to use a toll road/bridge/tunnel, only residents pay a road tax if applicable. It doesn't matter who operates it, although most major bridges etc etc were built with government funds.

What are you getting at?

I just dont really understand you are making this point in this thread as it doesn't seem particularly relevent.

In a car and driving sense

How many times have you been to Portugal? They are a developed Western nation. It's not like Latvia..

Think there is some confusion I was referring to scrapping road tax and imposing a Toll like system used in France, if you use the Motorways you pay, no matter of nationality. So the government gets its return on ware and tear and maintenance. Private firms do this currently whilst taking the responsibility from the government or local agencies or build it in the first place.

It’s like the BBC, I don’t watch it, why should I pay for it if I want to watch Virgin 1.

In 1997, looking at EU statistics there’s been somewhat of a massive improvement since then of nearly 40% reduction in deaths :p

The BBC said:
A 46-year-old Portuguese lorry driver has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

Doesnt this say a lot

We can all sit here and be armchair experts, but the trained police investigators at the scene had reason to suspect the lorry driver is at fault.

Regardless of whether he is guilty or not, the fact there is grounds for suspicion says at all.

And whats with the jumping in the person who said it was a supprise the lorry driver was foreign ? 5th gear have been here years ago about the increasing accident rates of left hand drive trucks on englands roads.

And RA420LX620 (or whatever his username is, whats wrong with steve or something ? :D) has many a time warned us about the poor standards of foreign truckers with regards vehicle upkeep and following EU directives on ammount of time allowed on the road etc..

In some ways im glad the whole family was there, i couldnt imagine being a parent that stayed at home for that trip. Would be better if things like this didnt happen at all though :(

Seriously sad :(

and..

"Motorists were also affected by another crash on the M6 when a car travelling north between junctions 15 and 14 crossed the central reservation and hit a van heading south. "

Idiot

Got stuck for 2 hours queuing to get off at J15 this morning due to this accident, was hoping it would have been cleared and re-opened but must have been a big one.

Can the rolleyes crew either explain whats wrong with what he said or shut up?
If he gave a more detailed point of view as to why he wasn't surprised at it being a foreign driver, I (and sure the others) would have put more effort in. That was the whole reason for the short replies!
