Horsemeat

So what's a beef burger if not beef? Doesn't it have to be made of beef to be called a beef burger? Otherwise it'd be a whatevermeat-burger?

With sausages there has to be a certain % of meat in them for them to be labeled as a 'pork sausage' and there is another minimum amount below that for them to be allowed to be labeled as just 'sausage'. I can't remember what they are off the top of my head though. Probably similar regulations apply for burgers.

I see Tesco have a public announcement and apology on their splash screen, i'm glad i haven't shopped with them for some time and generally don't buy these items anyway as it'd make me feel sick knowing I may of eaten a previous grand national winner!

A friend of ours last August whilst we were out camping was insisting that her Tesco Value burgers were exactly the same as the lovely tasty aberdeen angus burgers I was eating and I was just wasting money, mine were just a bit bigger. I did point out there was loads of other crap in them as evidenced by the ingredients which show they are only 80odd percent meat and as we were out camping at a Horse event I joked that they were probably horse meat rather than beef!

Seems I was 29% correct

Nice - so a beef burger needs to be 62% beef.

and... 38%... can be... whatever they want?

Well there's bound of be restrictions, but essentially yes. Though I think any other 'meat' has to be from the same animal, I'm not 100% sure can't be bothered reading the legislation.

I usually try to stick to well known branded items rather than garbage like "Tesco Value".

Probably still had my fair share of horse though.

also lol @ above link

All of our horse burgers contain horse meat

you dont say

Just got a batch of 200 Tesco beef burgers cheap, it only cost me a pony.

A man was in hospital from eating too many of their horse meat burgers.. It's ok he's in a stable condition..

People say 'i could eat a horse'
Tesco takes it seriously
Everyone complains...

What is wrong with people! you complain if your arse is on fire, you complain if its put out!

As a general rule. If the ingredients are listed as "Beef" "Lamb" "Pork" etc then the parts of the animal being used are from generally recognised cuts. If the ingredients list simply "Meat" then it will be from the parts of the animal that are left once all the generally recognised cuts haver been removed! (Sinew, skin, MRM (AKA "Pink Slime") etc)

Yum!
