How about a Linux gallery?

i spent yesterday (last night) setting up my new gentoo install... so i finally get to post in here *yay*

screenshot

i used the new gentoo graphical installer (as i couldn't be bothered w/ the old fashioned way) and it was really quite nice. until it kinda stopped at the end. so, i just restarted the machine and the install has seemed nice and stable since. however, i had to manually set up some stuff like xdm starting at boot etc. no problems since though *touch wood*

oh, and i'm really impressed w/ gnome. think i'll be playing with xgl/compiz later on.

been using kde for the last few weeks, never really liked it but after making it look a bit better, it's 100x better than gnome. i feel so dirty :(

ugh, no offence but i just can't stand kde. just something about it, a bad vibe perhaps?

I never could but after finding all those 'I wish I could do that' niggles in gnome could be done in kde, I was sold. I knew gnome had a reputation of over-simplifying it's UI, but it's not since I've given KDE the time it deserves that I realised how much.

certainly sounds fair enough, but i'm going to stick it out with gnome :S i wanted to set up the xgl compiz stuff today but i'm having to compile firefox and then update the whole system which is taking an age :s

I dont know if that was the intent, but that looks like Vista. :p

Im not a fan of KDE myself. I used it on a few Knoppix disks and found its layout/functionality a bit contradictory at times. I like Gnome in Ubuntu because its simple enough for it to just 'work'.
Each to their own though. :)

I finally managed to get 64bit Dapper installed and working properly. Damn Opera for not being 64 bit :p

First time i've used linux so i'm pretty noobish at the moment.

linux is not windows :(

not sure why people change to linux saying "I'm fed up with windows etc" and then make linux look exactly the same

but, out of interest what are those images at the top of firefox?

To be fair I don't think people switch from Windows for purely aesthetic reasons.. as it happens I have a dev box at home running Vista RC1 (work dev purposes) and the GUI is amazing, far nicer than my Fedora boxes. I haven't tried xgl under Ubuntu yet though..

I switched to linux because I wanted the choice and freedom to run whatever I wanted without having to pay a premium to do so :)
