How broken is windows update for W7 users?

I was hit with the win7 update bug today.
svchost stuck at 13%, memory being hogged and windows update just sat for hours and hours.

I have followed the advice in that link above and windows update is working fine for me again now.
It did flag loads of updates. Just use your common sense with them.
No one needs 44 language packs.

That link has been updated recently and does contain some "serious" news about win 7 updates. From October the end users will no longer be able to see what's in them. Every "patch Tuesday" will just be a roll-up of all the stuff Microsoft want on your machine. You get to decide whether or not to install it.
So no more skipping of the stuff you don't want.

Ive got an svchost stuck at 8% all the time now, and using about 1.1k mem., guess i need to do this as well then, as still just endlessly checking for updates :-

just done that after a day of nothing normally and windows updates have started after a few minutes.

really easy to follow.could save many a long time.hope it helps.

just to update this has worked and now the 200 odd updates have come through.easiest solution i found.

I don't know why its all of a sudden not working, as i check manually for updates everyday, for the definitions for defender etc..., and it has no problem finding and downing those, and funnily enough, the last definitions update i got for defender, was on Monday, the bloody day before!.

Moved over to Windows 10 because of the Windows 7 update issue and I can honestly say I have had more BSOD's with this OS than I ever had with 7. Really not liking it or the sneaky Microsoft will alter settings to default with subsequent updates after I have spent a while getting as I want it rather than as Microsoft wants it.

I only started getting the monthy update problem when the free ugrade to Win 10 was on and being pushed through, i could always get the definitons for defender and other whatnots fine, was just the patch Tuesdays id have the problems with, taking an age to find, then another age to down and finally install, im sure they are trying to force everyone off 7 and onto 10, and its even worse now, as just constanly checking, won't find anything.

Will have to get the above done, which will hopefully sort the ****** out for me too, like it has for others.

Ive got no interest in 10 yet, if there was a decent amount of actual proper Dx12 games, not just patched to 12 Dx11 ones, and they didn't run like crap, then it'd be a different story, but until that happens, i'll stick to me 7 :p

Well would you believe it, Windows Update has popped up with them, and they are now ready to be installed, but they wont down, just sits on 0%, so i'll give a few days, see if they do eventually down, as it has done before when its done this, and interestingly, one of the updates (3185911), is a supposed fix for the slow check.

I could always down them manually as well i spose, seen as i know what they are now :p
 
It finally kicked in and downed em, qtr to 10, all in fine, CPU back to 0%, as svchost back to using 0 CPU, and its memory back to normal as well! :D

Checked this thread yesterday to see if there were still problems and fired up windows update on my laptop this morning ready for a long spell of checking. I was amazed that it picked up the updates in less than 2 minutes!! Wow, that's two months in a row it's gone smoothly for me. :eek:

Just tried this on a work PC I am upgrading from XP. Before I did this the WU svchost.exe was using up to 1.8GB of RAM and was slowing the whole PC down. After trying the updates listed above the PC found 232+ updates in about two minutes! Definitely a time saver. :)
 
I've just gone back to Windows 7 and yup,Windows update not happening.

Just used that WSUS offline,And its grabbed the updates fine.

I think M$ done it on purpose to make people who choose to stay with 7 annoyed,because they dont seem to want to fix the issue,Convenient if you ask me.
 
I just built a PC today, put in my copy of Windows 7 64 bit Ultimate.

In the past it would have been a ridiculous amount of small updates, then a Service Pack 1 update, then a handful of updates.
What I get is a few updates, Service Pack 1, then an update that I cant seem to avoid installing that ends up leaving me unable to get any updates?

All I have had all day is issues with Windows update. What a joke Microsoft have became.

Biggest problem is some issue with my updates is leaving me unable to resolve my Samsung Rapid mode enabling.

Really wish Linux was as useful for gaming etc.
 
There is definitely something strange going on with Windows update for Windows 7 lately. I have build well over 300 Windows 7 computers over the last few years and only recently the updates are stuck on "Checking for updates" for many hours, in most cases between 3-8 but (using Windows 7 SP1 image) I had a laptop recently that was checking for updates for 3 days even though I did restart it several times and tried various troubleshooting steps online.

I have no idea what is going on with Windows 7 updates but it definitely was not like that in the past.

EDIT: I build few Windows 7 laptops/desktops per month at work and we do not plan to update yet.

Update 2952664 being pushed through yet again, the compatability one that supposedly helps the upgrade to Win 10, ive lost count on how many times ive hidden it.
 
Have you done anything to automate checking 7 updates against a black list so that you can hide the bad ones reliably.
I found a power shell script that gives a csv of the patches #'s and details, so that you can review them in excel as opposed to stupid windows update interface.

Since the windows update problems seem to be over (although they will start weekly roll-ups soon I believe) I was considering trying to keep up to date, as opposed to just turning on updates once a year (and relying on anti-virus & commonsense browser use, to avoid problems in the interim period - 'bunker' strategy)

UPDATE, October 11, 2016. Stay away from Windows Update today and for the foreseeable future. Set your Windows Update setting to Never. Wonky things are happening in Windows Update. We need to find a way to keep our Windows 7 systems -- Windows 7 and under our control. Hopefully, we will find a way and publish it.
