How does redex work?

So right now my 2006 Fiesta has just under a quarter of a tank of fuel. I'm going to full tank it tomorrow. Do I add redex now or after I have filled up?

Also what does it do? Anyone who's used, did you notice any difference in smoothness? etc
 
redex never made a difference to me, i was getting engine management light on with misfire Cylinder 3 on my bmw 330ci, i used BG44K twice in 4 weeks, now it gone.
 
Issue I have is that with my 1.25 2006 Ford Fiesta, I'm only getting around 220 - 230 miles from a full tank.

I do 60 miles a day for uni and it's done on A-Roads so there's no stop-start and it's at constant speed of 70mph.

It's been serviced every year and just had it's last service two months ago and it's MOT a couple of weeks ago which it passed with no advisories.

I'm stumped to what the problem is. I also feel the cars not running as smoothly as it should be. The tyre pressure etc is all correct.
 
Not knowing how big the tank is in a Fiesta, that does still seem really crap

I would suspect the problem is probably something you cant spend a fiver on a bottle of fluid to fix - although you've got not much to loose by trying it.

I'd suspect a sensor on it's way - MAF or lambda would be worth getting checked out.
 
I've used the black bottle of STP additive in my car, since that time the fuel consumption (which I keep track of at each fill up) has been better.

BUT:
-I've mended certain things since then (BBoB mainly).
-I've got used to the car more.
-Lots of other variables.

So the jury is definitely out.

well just try it, but also give BG44K a go, seems really good to me. but my car done over 120,000 miles
 
As I understand the folklore you're better off filling up with v power because you get all the extra additives but it works out cheaper. Apparantly people assume that if you out double the amount of redex in it will see twice the improvement but what they say is that the cleaning effect takes a few tanks and the difference will therefore be gradual. That's what 'they' say anyhow- I don't think there's any real evidence that's suggests anything other than marketig bs or placebo effect.
 
Erk, assuming 230 miles is a complete tank (45L according to parkers), that's about 23mpg :( That's a fair bit less than my car which is much heavier and much more powerful - so I'd suggest the problem is definitely something additive wont sort out

That is unbelievable! I hadn't worked it out in that sense.

I've already done around 3k in the car. I knew something was wrong but after having it serviced and MOT'd and nothing being flagged up I thought it was probably just me!
 
It's probably higher than that, as that would be using the entire capacity of the tank from full to completely empty.

I suggest you brim it (to the first click on the pump), reset the odometer, do a few miles and brim it again a few days later. This will give you a pretty accurate measure of how much fuel is used - convert it to gallons and divide the number of miles by it.

I'd really want to be seeing high 30s to low 40s from a carefully driven 1.25 at mostly motorway speeds

2. Slow down from 70mph to 65 that will make a difference, you only have a small engine in it and it does not have tall gearing, as its designed for town use, stop start.

Nonsense, you wouldn't get that poor economy driving at 70. I get much much better in my older 1.4 Fiesta which has the same engine albeit slight larger capacity.

His car should be getting 40+ mpg if it's a steady cruise at 70mph, something is obviously broken.

Exactly, my old 999cc uno would still eclipse 50mpg on the motorway averaging 80. For some reason people think high RPM = high fuel consumption, you use less fuel in town letting it rev a little higher with light throttle than groggling it between 1,000 and 2,000RPM

It's a 2006 Fiesta, not a 1985 escort - 70 is fine
 
Thanks for the replies. I'm going to full tank it later today then. I'm doing 60 miles tomorrow - I'll fill it up again and post back on here.

I'm going to try and book it in for one day this week.
