How Does Redex Work?

I have another Q and might aswell add it in this thread instead of making another one.

When I start my car in the morning it has a really hight idle. Like over 1k revs and can just exit out my driving at quite pace just using my clutch. It settles down after a few minutes.

Is that normal? If not, any ideas what is up with it?

Lol that will be the automatic choke...

Cleaning the MAF sensor with spray is an easy and quick way to improve your MPG. CRC MAF Cleaner is £10 and a quick job to do.

MAF sensor tells you car how much air is coming in. If it is dirty it gets the wrong reading and overfuels the engine creating cardon build up and low MPG.

I used it on my diesel and power and mpg were restored.

My old MK4 golf I used redex for the first time, it screwed with my engine when I was driving for a while, until it went through the system, didnt notice any difference after that

Wasnt sure if that was normal but iv never used it since

its a cheap product to lure in buyers, dont do it

I am sure there are better ways/products that are industry used for cleaning out your fuel system.

Top tip, dont use some, do up the cap and store it in your glove box - could result in it leaking and pretty much disintegrating your cloth or other matirial lining in the glove box

You necro'd a 3.5 year old thread for that? How did you even find it??

Thread is relevant for me at the moment. My 96k 1.8 Civic is just not returning acceptable MPG. Vpower so far (1/4 tank) sppears to be helping but low 30s mpg is just not right.

I've got a can of BG44K to go in when this tank is on its last drops (so it mixes when I refill) and I'll be cleaning the MAF and checking the EGR in the morning. BG44K seems to be well regarded although probably just another expensive placebo. I decided it couldn't hurt and will see how it goes.

Dump a load of redex in when you're nearly on an empty tank. Trundle around on tickover until you reach a suitable place then floor it - instant red arrow effect :D

Seafoam is a good modern engine cleaner.

Sea foam/redex - never seen anything convincing to show they actually do anything.

Sea foam gives you a good show but even dumped down your inlet manifold doesn't touch valve stem deposits.

IIRC there was an approx 4bhp increase after seafoam treatment on a 1996 Saab 9000 that was Stage 3 or 4. Going back about 6 years or so but there was a definite improvement. Bear in mind a highly tuned engine has a rule of diminishing returns so 4bhp was a very good improvement. Unfortunately it wasn't my car so I don't have any documentry evidence.

And yes the show was awesome too :D

Having spent 5 hours scrubbing a V10 with a toothbrush and Tunap spray, I am 100% certain that SeaFoam wont event slightly touch carbon deposits.

Use it on my bikes every few tanks. But petrol cars, I don't bother.

Diesel however, every few tanks again. I filled my 330d up for the 3rd time on Friday (always do from fuel light to brim) and poured an entire bottle in. It's about 25% too much, but it's not volatile nor damaging stuff if too much is put in.

It helps a lot on diesel engines.

Redex, Used it once a long time ago, nothing but trouble so had the car in and the technician said it buggerd my cat!
