Are you after all out speed then, handling or something else?

the mk3 supra that was recommended before would probs win for speed, maybe an lsd lude for handling?

If your talking UK MkIII supra with 230bhp then it wont really be any quicker than a Civic VTi, people under-estimate how quick these little cars are, they dont feel that quick either with the lack of torque.

Rover 200 vi. 144bhp, handle well, lighter than a rover turbo and 0-60 in around 7s.

With no easy/cheap tuning options, and a slower 0-60 than the turbo - I'd say the turbo was a better bet :)

i've already got an E30 project ta and i doubt i'd get a decent 325 manual 3 door for 1500 :)

Forgive me. I believe you very much could. It wouldn't be a minter/concours, but would easily be in good order, serviced, clean & standard car. Asking prices vary between 2 door, 4 foor and M sport variants. If you were to keep those options open. Anyway you know you'll get proper rwd, nuts and bolts engineering, cheap to fix/repair/service and tyre up if on sensible & fairly common optional 15" cross spokes (std on mtec). All facelifted (88>) BM's this would be. Earlier metal bumper models would be cheaper again but probably if you don't mind old skool trim. And maybe a spares bin to top it off.

My humble vote.

Other options on BM's could include e34 535 sport circa mid 1990's, much rarer 540 cars come up now and then but really a manual will be dearer by a fair margin. A 530 v8 maybe, cheap as chips. e32's if you can live with the flat cap image. Off the wall idea ? 320is Euro lhd model with the s14 for around the 2k mark. Those are out there for the finding.

What are you doing with your e30 ? Just curious.
Or is it secret ? :D

4 foor? :p :D

£1500 would also buy an old early e38.

Strip out the 3/4 ton+ of crap thats inside (leccy seats door cards etc etc etc) and you'll have a quick car. :D

maybe a polo g40? They handle really bad though. But with a £90 chip and pulley you can have a right hoot in a straight line. Another is a renault 21 turbo. You can pick one up for £1500 easily and you can play about with the boost etc. With a bar of boost and exhaust they will eat up things like a new focus st.

Another for the Rover.

Get any old body (scrapper) but with a good engine... should cost a couple of hundred for a 620. Spend the rest on suspension and engine mods... bigger turbo, intercooler and a few other bits should see you around 230bhp and 6.something to 60.

Mine (fairly standard) will do 135mph without thinking about it. It'd do more but I've never had the bottle to take it further. They go off the clock easily enough.
Don't forget the 820 Vitesse Sport ;)

Fast £1500 car

Ye i always loved the rover 620 turbo's, just some suggestions but maybe something like a Nissan primera GT great handling and they are bombproof :) , Sunny Gti quik nippy little car or maybe a alfa 145 cloverleaf but iam not to sure about reliability but there are plenty of cars you can get for going fast and having fun :D

p.s. New here as you may have noticed, and i really cant stop looking at the motors section its great. :)

cheap car ideas.. got lots of them :D

Ka with a 1.7 puma engine in...
Mini with a metro turbo engine in...
you might find a lotus 7 kit car with a decent turn of speed for that cash..
Fiat panda with an uno turbo engine in...

I'd go for the kit car.. ready made speed :D

EDIT: Kit Car.. get one.. you know you want to.. even one thats already built is a great fun car

lol some good suggestions - i would have put the same but people would be thinking im bias.

but yea all those are decent cars and plenty affordable too. id love a 145 clover, but i think repairs can be potentially wallet damaging.

Over the past few months I've been toying with the idea of a Volvo 850 T-5. Plus you get the Audi-quattro 5-cyl sound!
No way will you find a T5 for under £1500. You could look at the other Swedish alternative, the Saab 9000 Turbo, 2.3L giving up to 225hp. Can't really comment on the looks or handling, but you can get them well under budget so it's worth looking into.

Turbo's (due to having a cast iron lump) are heavier and so i have been told are not half as good at handleing as a Vi, but i agree they are hard to tune and a tiny bit slower in a straight line.
