I may get a torrent of abuse here, but why are the Macs so much quicker ? Is it just the OS is quicker...

I dont think the OS has much to do with it... there is very little differance between my WinXP and OSX times on the exact same Macpro hardware.

1:15 on the lappy, Centrino 1.6ghz, 1 gig of ram.
This is using CS3 beta.
Not got a my 6300 at 3.3ghz, 2 gig of ram, but should imagine around 30 secs according to other replies.

I just had a go as I built a new pc yesterday (first new pc in 5 years!) so thought it would be fun to see what its like.

35 seconds

CS2
C2D 2.4ghz
2 gig DDR2 @ 667
Just tried again in CS3. Also upped the memory allocation to %70 as I had forgotten last time as its a new system and thats where I've always set the memory in the past.

Anyway, this time is was 22 seconds so much happier about that :)

In photoshop go to the preferences and you'll see in there a memory allocation section in one of the options. On windows photoshop is set to %55 of the pc's memory by default. You can use a slider to change this to any amount you want but you need to make sure you leave some for the OS. I have always found %70 to be a good balance :)

no difference here taking the mmeory up, same 37secs - perhaps it's a setting for people with 1gbram only or maybe single core?
