How is Windows 8?

New apps not appearing on the Start screen is actually annoying. It should prompt you as it's downloading "would you like to pin this app to Start screen? Yes/No" instead of assuming people know it defaults to the app drawer.

A genuine example of bad design in Windows 8.1 in my opinion.

I agree with this like.

On my work laptop I used Windows 8 for 2 weeks and then upgraded to Windows 8.1, I don't mind it. The laptop has an SSD and takes less than 30 seconds to boot to login screen. There are quirks but once you get the hang of those and the UI behaviour, it guts is not that much different to Windows 7. To me Windows 8 is Windows 7 with a change in "theme".

Still rocking Windows 3.1 For Workgroups, **** change

You know when people say that alternate versions of Windows are good, and to avoid the ones in between? XP good, Vista bad, Win7 good... I think it's more like versions ending in .1 are good, and all those in between are the stinkers. So 8.1 would be the rational upgrade path from 3.1 for sure.

I agree, One of the few things that annoys me about 8.1.

Smacks of being a rushed feature, there are positives to it though in that it keeps the "register this rubbish" etc etc off the start screen.
Ironically Office was one of the worst offenders of filling the start screen with junk!

I don't think it's necessarily a rushed decision, as they purposely changed the behaviour. I see it as a straight up bad call.

As correctly pointed out above the official line is that it was a response to feedback concerning tiles taking over the Start screen. Putting aside the fact we're constantly being told the Windows store has "no apps", I'd love to know who these people are that -

  1. Are so engaged with the Metro experience that the sheer number of tiles has become a problem, AND
  2. Are unable or unwilling to spend a couple of minutes un-pinning or switching off the unnecessary tiles

It's so easy to batch un-pin tiles in 8.1 I don't understand how they can justify changing the default to something so obscure. Having a newly installed app appear front and centre in your application launcher is expected behaviour not only on competing operating systems, but also previous versions of Windows.

It annoys the people who understand what's happening and downright confuses those who don't. It's a bizarre choice and completely ass backwards in my opinion. It needs fixing.

Would it not be better to put the "group" of applications inside it's own tile, so for example:

Clicking on the tile starts said application
Right-Clicking the tile offers the other stuff, e.g Help Files, Uninstaller, Safe Mode Executable etc.

Is this possible in Metro?

Been running windows 8.1 for a few weeks now,Although not as it should be...ive tweaked the hell out of it to be more like windows 7 completely skipping he metro and uninstalling all the "Apps" junk.

Still, even though it is faster than windows 7 in some things such as boot/shutdown and transferring of files etc...i personally still prefer windows 7.

If your building a new system and looking for a OS i say go windows 7.

I've been running 8/8.1 for awhile now, I can't stand the Metro interface, but using start 8 and avoiding Metro all together I am very happy with it. It feels generally a little bit faster and the dx11.1 fps bonus in Battlefield 4 is a winner for me.

Upgrading from Windows 7 for the sake of it wont see you a massive boost but if your building a new system I would go for 8.1 and use some start button replacement software as Metro simply doesn't belong on a desktop imho :P

Hey,

I've heard a lot of humms and haas, a lot of moaning about it too.
But how is Windows 8(or more correctly 8.1) as an operating system compared to 7?

Long story short I no longer have access to the MSDN I got my windows 7 from, going into a new build I'm gonna need an OS and was wondering if I should grab a Windows 7 or go for the newer 8.1?
I've only briefly used 8 and it's alright, but initially confusing to me.

I mainly Game and program using Visual studio 2008 & 2010, Unity 3D, etc
I would assume these would run fine but thought It was best to get some feedback/opinions.

Thanks :D

from desktop is there a quick way to shut down?

Not at all obvious have to click start button BOTTOM LEFT to get windows app screen login is TOP RIGHT

then choose log off from app screen then once logged off click to get past splash screen then click the button BOTTOM RIGHT.

I presume there is an WIN + ALT to do it faster but it's not at all obvious.

8 was BAD without it!

Actually its some users that were bad without it, they could not use a simple Win8 OS without a third party Start button menu ,says it all really about their skill and adaptability,as always they have to blame the OS because they refuse or cannot accept any responsibility  .

Its not just app store apps. It pinned any deaktop or apps store short cut. And if you look back about a thousand people on this forum complained about it.

Or right click start button. Job done.

8 was BAD without it!

Why was windows 8 so bad without the start button? (and or start8) I know there have been some changes made to the way the start screen works. But not so many that makes the previous a deal breaker or bad.

Personally I move my mouse to the same position and click regardless of 8 or 8.1

you need start8 to make win8 good, otherwise its a fuddle to use

How so? what does start8 do that makes Windows 8 acceptable, and why is windows 8.1 fine?

personally I have used

windows 8 cp
windows 8
windows 8.1
and server 2012

And still struggle to see why there is so much fuss over windows 8 and using third party applications to make it "right" and so much hate over the UI.

Coming from Vista after 6 years (never any problems or BSOD's), Win8 was very different. Took me about 10 minutes to figure out how to shut down the first time.
Now, with Win8.1, I feel very comfortable using it and it seems to respond a lot quicker when navigating. There's still a few issues I have but that's just a matter of customization which I haven't done much with yet.
