How is Windows 8?

It is an irritating confusing mess.

Even if I wanted to try and love Metro/modern/whatever, whenever I use a program that can only run on my PC rather than tablet it dumps me out of modern ui into the desktop, which is a gimped version of win 7.

The modern ui offers me nothing i cant get on my tablet and I can't get rid of it. The desktop part doesn't allow me to see all my prgrams without going back to the modern ui which then kicks me back into desktop. Àaaaaaagh

I am "ok" with Windows 8.1, as long as I have the Classic Shell installed. Often I completely forget about the Modern UI, as I do not see it, except for the rare time when a breaking news headline pops up on my desktop, along with a sound. I think that it is something to do with an app (?) but I seem to put up with that rare occurrence rather than try and resolve it.

For us and our use, with our 4 PC's at home, using the Classic Shell utility is a must. The Modern UI just lacks a consistent feel and flips from that to the desktop as some apps are and then others are not compatible with that interface. Browsing drives and networks and using RDC etc etc etc is so much easier (or maybe just familiar) for me via the traditional desktop.

The main reason for us having Windows 8 on our four PC's was the price, I paid £15 per copy and so I sort of stuck with it. Also I really wanted it to work and tried, initially, quite hard to appreciate its native interface but on a PC with a mouse and keyboard it seems that it is just not going to happen, for me.
Without the likes of apps like the Classic Shell though I would doubt that I would still be using it, my Father in Law managed to get a refund when it cost around £50 and so he is back, and liking it, to Windows 7.

I installed Windows 7 the other day, on a spare drive, (I use SSD's for both OS's) and I had forgotten how many updates etc need to be applied. But once installed and up and going I was reminded at how fast and responsive it is, not noticing any advantages in speed which is claimed for Windows 8.x.

The windows 8 desktop is not a gimped version of windows 7.

Confusing, sad times when a simple OS like Win8 is supposed to be confusing, old days on DOS 6.22 was confusing ie rearranging IRQs and memory to get games and software to work, making and changing autoexec.bat files etc.

Users now have it so simple with modern Windows yet its confusing?..I will go in a corner and cry lol,do we need to be spoon fed for 10000 years.

Btw its fine not to like Win8 but to say its confusing, well I got my point of view across.

I upgraded to Win8 when it was released and have also done the 8.1 upgrade.

Personally i preferred win8 to 8.1 because there was some better UI things imho. Win 8.1 has added some things but also taken away some of the behaviour i liked in win8.

I use win8.1 as my main machine and still have win7 on my gaming rig. I swap between them all the time and my personal opinion is that win7 is still my preferred operating system.

I have found that using win8's search features has made me use win7 better. Also i appreciate the speed and lean resource use of win8/8.1 but for my rigs it isnt necessary. I will still keep 8.1 on my little netbook as it works a lot better than win7 ever did.

I think ive given 7, 8 and 8.1 fair usage between then and decided that i like win7 the most for my main rigs, but will will use 8.1 on my netbook. I think it is foolish to decide you like/dont like something before giving it a fair trial (and i dont mean 10 minutes!)

at least the DOS screens were inconsistent and you could follow the design logic of how it works. I find it more challenging second guessing win 8 than I did using DOS.

There is very little logic to win 8 and that makes it confusing.

There is logic to Win8,you have to remember its a hybrid OS, so no longer just an old outdated desktop OS but modern OS that caters for all hardware so obviously learning curve is a little higher(it's not rocket science even for the lazy),took me less then two weeks to fully get use to Win8 and that was without any third party start button mod,now I find it quite natural and can find anything I want very quickly.

I look back at my DOS days and think what I had to do just to get a mouse to work or a game to run, lets be honest Win8 or any modern OS is childs play nowadays.
As I already stated it's fine to dislike an OS but confusing, sorry does not cut it with me.

The big question is how will some of the guys here handle Win9 or Win10,I hate to think what they will stumble over first  .

Yeah, all my PCs are now using SSDs for C:

Hell, even my 2 main Laptops both use 2 drives now ( DV6 & 6730B ) and I have an externel DVDRW if I should need to use it.

My Windows 7 license has expired so I have now purchased windows 8.1 pro. I was contemplating buying a new Windows 7 license but deep down it felt stupid not to opt for Win 8 now. I'm looking quite forward to the new UI and stuff, especially the performance boosts people here are mentioning with SSD's.

I'm still using Intel RST caching ie 64gb Crucial SSD as cache for my 1TB Seagate HD,very snappy and fast in bootup, even first time in on some online multiplay maps ,don't have to worry about space etc...

Ah but the thing is, that my games are all stored in D:\Games\here and you see just how bad a HD can be against an SSD when some of the loading times are NOT the best.

Dont get me wrong, the Desktop doesnt suffer at all, but the Laptops do!

On my DV6 I splashed out and bought a Hybrid Drive for the second drive, but its not really any faster ( not wholly true ), but I sometimes think that I could be just as well accepting that the Laptop no matter what HDs I use, are simply never going to be as good as my Desktops.
