How is Windows 8?

When it comes to Windows 8, a lot of people seem to not understand the difference between "I don't like because it's new" with "IT'S CRAP AND I'M ABOUT TO THROW UP BECAUSE OF HOW BAD IT IS".

How so? what does start8 do that makes Windows 8 acceptable, and why is windows 8.1 fine?

personally I have used

windows 8 cp
windows 8
windows 8.1
and server 2012

And still struggle to see why there is so much fuss over windows 8 and using third party applications to make it "right" and so much hate over the UI.

inc win8.1 (sorry I left it out)

because its totally alien to what your used to for years with winxp/vista/win7

start8 puts it right (the way it should have been)by restoring the true start button/menu

its only because of silly touchscreen tablets that win8/metro is the way it is,it does nothing for desktop pc

but as an os with start8 win8 and 8.1 is fine;)

It's not totally alien, and it's not "the way it should have been", it's just change that people can't deal with. I was butthurt over it at first until I realised I was being stupid and took a step back and realised I was butthurt just because I didn't know how to get about.

Can you still run start8 on 8.1?

Also is there a way to when you press the windows key bring up the autohidden task bar as it as in 7? Everytime I press I get the start menu and it's a little annoying to say the least.

it still works on 8.1

Its not just app store apps. It pinned any deaktop or apps store short cut. And if you look back about a thousand people on this forum complained about it.

It still doesn't justify obscuring newly installed apps. If your start screen is cluttered, it literally takes about 30 seconds to tidy up. The solution was to enable smaller tiles and the ability to batch resize, and they did that. That's the whole point of having a configurable Start screen.

The onus should be on the more experienced user to streamline their UI, not have the OS hide things from everybody by default.

from desktop is there a quick way to shut down?

Not at all obvious have to click start button BOTTOM LEFT to get windows app screen login is TOP RIGHT

then choose log off from app screen then once logged off click to get past splash screen then click the button BOTTOM RIGHT.

I presume there is an WIN + ALT to do it faster but it's not at all obvious.
Misinformation or what??

with start8 it's very good

without its a pile of dog dirt made for a tablet and butchered onto a pc...

scroll up and down on a mouse to swipe left and right.......... go figure

I'm on my third day with Win 8.1 on a desktop PC. After the original culture shock of not being able to find where things are, It's beginning to make sense and I'm finding my way around. Just found the "right click on the start button" trick, for example. The Metro interface doesn't seem to make any sense on a PC (without touchscreen), so it would be nice to be able to make it go away entirely.

Away from interface issues, it does seem very speedy and slick - but then I'm running it on a new overclocked 4770K!

Windows 8 is useless on anything other than tablets.

Disagree. It's not useless on anything but tablets, but the Metro screen provides a better experience on Windows tablets.

If you want a regular start menu there is an app called Start Menu 8 that can provide it.

As an OS it's not really any different, except for the fact that some companies, like Corsair for example, haven't updated all of their drivers to be compatible with 8.1.

Only annoying thing I've found thus far is that full screen apps need to be closed by pressing ALT + F4 rather than having a close button. Not exactly the end of the world though.

Which just shows how useless it is. You need a third-party app to make it useful.

Point proven.

Edit: This is my opinion. In my case, needing a third-party app to make it useful makes it useless for ME. However, this may not be the case for you.
