How is Windows 8?

Which just shows how useless it is. You need a third-party app to make it useful.

Point proven.

Complete BS I don't use any third party button mod.

I use Metro to organise my tiles and columns which helps keep my old desktop Ui very neat and actually does not take long to get use to Win8/8.1.
Most of us can actually adapt without moaning and making excuses.

I sometimes wonder how you would have fared with DOS and getting games to run. End of the day any modern Windows is dead simple and easy to use and that includes Win8/8.1 even as a desktop user without touch.

I could be really annoying by correcting your grammar, but I'm not going to :p.

That's your opinion, but when I used it, I hated it and that is why I am not upgrading our PC to 8.

When you say grammar you actually mean punctuation.

You also don't seem to understand what an opinion is. "My opinion" is not a defence for talking rubbish and making unsubstantiated claims.
You should learn that there is a difference between you disliking the new interface and it being useless. Useless and dislike are not the same things.

For ME, disliking the UI does make it useless (for ME), as I can't use it productively. I accept, however, that I should have added an 'in my opinion' to my post, so my deepest apologies for upsetting you with that.

I thought I wouldn't like it, but after getting used to it, I prefer it to Windows 7. Looks better on my 55" smart TV than 7 did, seems faster too to me.

Hey,

I've heard a lot of humms and haas, a lot of moaning about it too.
But how is Windows 8(or more correctly 8.1) as an operating system compared to 7?

Long story short I no longer have access to the MSDN I got my windows 7 from, going into a new build I'm gonna need an OS and was wondering if I should grab a Windows 7 or go for the newer 8.1?
I've only briefly used 8 and it's alright, but initially confusing to me.

I mainly Game and program using Visual studio 2008 & 2010, Unity 3D, etc
I would assume these would run fine but thought It was best to get some feedback/opinions.

Thanks :D

I'm currently running Windows 8.1 Pro on my gaming rig and I have no problems with it at all. You just need to have a fiddle around with it first to get used to the metro UI (which I'm a huge fan of BTW). I think a lot of people tend to not like it because it's a huge change and takes a lot of getting used to

No, I mean grammar.

Lol so you can handle grammar but not Win8,says it all  .

Btw the old grammar attack always comes in with some users over the years when they can't really justify their end of the debate and try to change subject or derail the thread.

I'm really finding it so hard to understand why people are resorting to the likes of start8.
Admittedly on every install I've removed all the default apps. But with all that gone my start screen is very clean and very clear, no searching through 30+ lines of text to find what i need.
Loosing the start menu is liberating once you put the effort into getting to know windows 8!
And the right click menu's are quite frankly genius, no more trailing through menus to run cmd as an admin among a whole host of other reasons.

it has big fisher price buttons for kids,

Funny you mention that, people said the exact same thing about XP, look how that turned out. ;)

it fails because it was made for a tablet and not a pc...

it has big fisher price buttons for kids, it offers me nothing i need on a pc with a MOUSE

a tablet yes!

Problem is you could argue XP,Vista offer more or less same thing as Win7,Win8 is their first hybrid OS that can handle any type of hardware this is what most desktop PC users don't understand, want to use a mouse and keyboard like I do it can do that, also touch or keyboard shortcuts.

The old desktop OS is changing, it's no longer the main kid on the block and is behind the times with rest of the other modern hardware,W8 is their first step just like when Win3.11 went over to Win95 and that remained the same virtually for almost two decades until Win8 arrived.
Don't like the look of Metro tiles change them yourself with something like OblyTile and do your own customised tiles.

End of the day I don't think you will see the old desktop UI back even in Win9,10,the modern Windows OS is evolving into something more then just a basic desktop OS.
We all dislike and like different things, but I can fully understand why Microsoft have done this, end of the day I've seen it all from my early DOS days so UI changes, different OS layouts etc are nothing new to me.

Wow, such a large amount of feedback, though a lot of arguments it seems :p

Well the main thing I wanted to find out was whether or not 8/8.1 was better a an operating system.
Which it seems to be, while a good system should be user friendly as well that is not really a point for me.

Riding a bike is more efficient than walking, and it takes time to learn. So I'll be willing to learn a new UI, for a faster more optimised OS.

MY PC is connected to my main TV along with my Office Monitor and I use remote desktop on a tablet.

Windows 8 is so much better under these usage scenarios is untrue, but if you are still only using your OS on a single PC locked away in your sweaty tiny spare room man dungeon that the Mrs has banished you to and think that tiny file trees are the pinnacle of UI design then yeah,

8 ain't for you.

Windows 8 is great, however 8.1 has just toasted my PC. :D

PC insisted on a reboot to install the 8.1 update from the store and then blue screened itself to death till finally repairing and booting to my Desktop.

The sheer amount of drug induced colours it had applied to my tiles was horrendous, it didn't concern me too much though as once I rebooted it no longer works.

Booted to a black screen and nothing happened. Attempts to repair/refresh fail and I am back reinstalling Windows 8 fully.

My install was about 2 weeks old so I'm full of joy but at least I had current drivers downloaded I could use haha.

I tried it last a couple of days ago - I can see both sides of the argument. I quite liked it but need to use it more to give proper opinion.

It would be nice if Microsoft gave a "Start 8" style option built in.

I am happy with windows 8.1

Windows to boots to desktop, so you can ignore the metro.

Got used to right clicking the start icon to shut down finally!

Only thing I dislike - Charm bar (so useless to me)
