How long would it take to walk 3 miles?

No it didn't - ever thought about entering for the Olympics?

I honestly thought we were getting some serious replies since average walking speed is 20 minute miling and then we get this one.
In all the years I've been running marathons and half marathons the one thing I've learnt is that people have absolutely no idea how far somewhere is and make it up.

6mph is not an unreasonable walking speed for somebody that is used to walking quickly. I walk just over 4 miles home and that takes me 40-45 minutes if I rush. White city to Ealing common, if you want to check the route.

Racewalkers go much faster.

4mph is getting towards power walking speeds; I'm very doubtful most people could sustain this for any length of time.

6mph is NOT a realistic estimate and I'd be very doubtful you could walk that fast tbh; you'd either be breaking into a jog or be knackered after a few seconds. It'd be more efficient jogging.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Power_walking - not the best source, but states 4.5-5.5mph as power walking speed.

First, there was a typo, it should have said 46 minutes.

Second, I know how long it took me to walk home because I did it for ten years straight, return fares are expensive. There were tv shows I wanted to watch, things I wanted do, I had that timing nailed.

With so much walking talent here we should be able to get an Olympic qualifying time for one of the walking events.

Complete and utter tosh.
6 mph is my running speed and I'll guarantee you'll never come past me (but I'm not saying an Olympic walker wouldn't but they would be walking as though there was something wrong with them).
Try putting a treadmill on 5 mph (12 minute miling) and see how long you can sustain it and you will break into a jog within seconds unless you start to look daft.

qqg3 -
46 minutes is more reasonable and do-able but even with all my running experience I don't think I could do it.
My fast walking pace over 30 minutes is 6kph (3.7mph).
I have no doubt people know how long it takes but people don't know distances.

walking at 6mph would have put you in the top 70% of finishers in this years Sheffield Half Marathon which would hardly make it a realistic walking pace for an everyday person.

6mph = 9.7 kmph

From running on treadmills that seems like a very unlikely walking pace unless you're some sort of freak. Deffo light jogging pace.

Usually takes me about 2 hours but my walk home is BOSS and BOSS means i can only walk doing the 'Ghostbusters walk'

Seriously though work is just under 3 miles and when i walk it usually takes between 45 minutes to an hour. (I can really just stroll some days.)

Well..... you're wrong. Simple as that. :)

You think it's impossible to walk a mile in ten minutes? And sustain it for 4? What planet are you living on?

I have no doubt you're not a very good runner if you think walking at 6mph is superhuman.
