Two slices of bread per sandwich.
Four half slices of bread = two whole slices of bread = one sandwich.

If you half a pizza you don't have two pizzas!

I'm northern, Its one.

Although, still on the food theme, as you said a pizza halfed, is not two pizza's. If you cut a half pizza in half again, is that a quarter or a slice? A pork pie cut in half is still one pie, halved.

Although, if you split a pint of beer into two half glasses, whats that?? Thats not still a pint is it? sandwiches must be mystical.

My head hurts

its still just one sandwedge cut in half.

if you go to tescos, sainsburys or your local deli, the sandwedge would be cut in half (mostly) but its still JUST ONE SANDWEDGE!

Well, as I too am now confused about the definition of one sandwich, I did an experiment. After careful deliberation over what filling to use, I decided that for the purposes of this experiment, a simple cheese filling would be the most appropriate(this of course was not due in any way to the fact that this is the only sandwich filling I have). After each division of the sandwich, I took a photograph and using the rules of North and South sandwich making, hypothesised the quantity. Thus I present my findings(which I admit may not be totally conclusive).

Well... if I'm honest, they weren't conclusive at all. If it's any consolation, the sandwich(es) tasted pretty good...

Sandwich is now a verb.

In the context of this thread, the sandwich is the result of sandwich-ing however many pieces of bread together.

Therefore:

1)You start off with one slice of bread. Put your filling on. Either cut it or fold it over. You have ONE sandwich.

2) Start with two slices. Putting those two slices together, with a filling inbetween, gives you a sandwich. Gilly can blast it to smithereens for all I care. All he'll be left with is the microscopic remains of ONE sandwich.

3) Take one enormous baguette. Cut it longitudinally. Put in filling. Close baguette together. ONE sandwich. Cutting it now will give you PIECES of the sandwich.

4) Cut a baguette in half. Cut it longitudinally. Put in filling. Close the half-baguette together. You have ONE sandwich.

Take the other half of the baguette. Cut it longitudinally. Put in filling. Close the half-baguette together. You now have a SECOND sandwich.

It's not rocket science. Good job Gilly didn't work on the Apollo missions.

And let's have no more talk of "Rounds" when talking about bread, toast, or sandwiches. It's just rubbish.

See, I told you it was the southerners that were struggling with this ;)

OK, so if you have 2 pieces of bread, and you cut them both diagonally, then put filling on two of them and then put the other pieces of bread on top of the first two, how many sandwiches do you have?
